W\ufeffest Coast<\/a> captain Luke Shuey<\/a> has announced his retirement from the AFL<\/a> at the age of 33.<\/p>\n

Shuey follows in the footsteps of long-time teammate \ufeffShannon Hurn, who called time on his own career last week<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The pair won the 2018 premiership together, \ufeffwith Shuey collecting the Norm Smith Medal for his efforts in the five-point grand final win over Collingwood.<\/p>\n

Shuey also won the club's highest individual medal twice\ufeff in a career that's reaped 247 senior games to date.<\/p>\n

"As much as my mind wants to go on, my body won't allow it and I have made the decision to retire at the end of this season," Shuey said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

"We have tried everything to get my body right so I can contribute as I would like, but unfortunately a series of hamstring injuries have led me to this this decision.<\/p>\n

"I also have great confidence in the senior players who will take the club forward to guide an exciting group of youngsters.<\/p>\n

"We are at an important phase of the rebuild, we'll bring in more talented youngsters in this year's draft and I know I will enjoy seeing them all make their mark on the competition in the coming years."<\/p>\n

Shuey has captained the Eagles for the last four years, and is already a life member of the club.<\/p>\n

\ufeff"Luke has been a remarkable player for our club, but he also been a wonderful role model and leader," head coach Adam Simpson said.<\/p>\n

"We have seen that impact even this year when he has been able to play but unfortunately, he has not been able to get out there as often as he would have liked.<\/p>\n

"He has driven high standards throughout his career and has certainly provided a great example right from the get-go for the young players who will be the future."<\/p>\n

The Eagles sit last on the AFL ladder but have games against the Dockers, Bulldogs, and Crows to finish the season.<\/p>\n
