South Sydney<\/a> icon Sam Burgess<\/a> has told Rabbitohs officials he is earger to take up an opportunity as the head coach of the Warrington Wolves in the Super League at the end of the season, reports Nine's Michael Chammas<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Warrington is in talks with Burgess for the head coaching role next year and he is in the box seat for the job.<\/p>\n

South Sydney is aware Burgess, who hails from the English town of Dewsbury, is being targeted and is preparing to be without the 2014 NRL grand final hero next year.<\/p>\n

Burgess rejected an approach from Dolphins coach Wayne Bennett to take up a role as Jason Demetriou's assistant this year.<\/p>\n

The Rabbitohs have a surplus of assistant coaches, including John Morris and Ben Hornby, in their football department and won't need to find a replacement for Burgess.<\/p>\n

The legendary front-rower played 182 NRL games for the Rabbitohs across two stints \u2014 the first from 2010-2014 and the second from 2016-2019.\ufeff<\/p>\n

In between his stints in the NRL he had an underwhelming crack at rugby union, although he did represent England.<\/p>\n

He retired from the NRL in 2019 due to \ufeffa chronic shoulder injury.<\/p>\n
