IndyCar<\/a> front-runner Scott McLaughlin<\/a> has broken a 14-race drought to snag pole position for the Music City Grand Prix in Nashville.<\/p>\n

It marked back-to-back pole positions on the streets of Nashville for the Kiwi driver having snagged top spot exactly a year ago.<\/p>\n

The Team Penske pilot topped the first leg of qualifying before making it through to the Fast 12 shootout where he wound up fourth.<\/p>\n

Stan Sport is the only place to watch the 2023 IndyCar Series, featuring Will Power, Scott McLaughlin and Scott Dixon.<\/strong><\/em> All the action streaming ad free, live and on demand<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n

He then put in a blistering lap in the Fast Six, going three tenths faster than nearest rival Pato O'Ward of McLaren.<\/p>\n

Andretti Autosport's Colton Herta was third and more than half a second behind, six tenths adrift all told.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Series leader Alex Palou wound up fourth for Chip Ganassi Racing while David Malukas was a standout performer for Dale Coyne Racing in fifth.<\/p>\n

Romain Grosjean enjoyed an uptick in performance, qualifying sixth for Andretti Autosport.<\/p>\n

"We did a big lap in Q1 that really set us up," said McLaughlin.<\/p>\n

"Every time we're in this printer wagon, this DEX Imaging Chevy, she's a ripper.<\/p>\n

"Yeah, really proud of that one, but we set it up in Q1. We had a really good run, stayed with one lap, and you've got to do the big laps when you need to do them."<\/p>\n

Last year, McLaughlin finished second to countryman Scott Dixon in a race that coined the nickname 'Crashville' due to the chaotic nature of the contest.<\/p>\n

The three-time Supercars champion said he's happy he'll be ahead of any carnage that may play out.<\/p>\n

"Who knows with this place? It's scary, yellows can happen out of the blue and strategy can be blown out everywhere, but we start on the number one spot and that's the main thing," he said.<\/p>\n

"Really proud of all the team. It's basically the same car we had last year. To put it on pole two years in a row is unreal."<\/p>\n

While McLaughlin was the standout, the other antipodean drivers struggled.<\/p>\n

Will Power<\/a> qualified seventh after a mistake cost him a shot of making it through to the Fast Six.<\/p>\n

"I made a mistake in (turn) nine," he explained.<\/p>\n

"We were on a lap until nine that was good enough to get through. I locked a front (wheel) then got all the way out to the wall down to first (avenue). Yeah, that kind of ruined it for us.<\/p>\n

"Damn. Shouldn't have done that. You've got to get it on that first lap when the tyre is good and it's your only chance.<\/p>\n

"We were there, made a little mistake, can't do that."<\/p>\n

Dixon found himself in rarefied air when he too made a mistake and clouted the inside wall before spearing across the track into outside.<\/p>\n

His car suffered significant damage and brought proceedings in the Fast 12 to a halt briefly.\u00a0<\/p>\n

That was to the detriment of Josef Newgarden, who failed to make it through to the final shootout. He'll start ninth, the lowest of the Team Penske trio.<\/p>\n

Marcus Armstrong bowed out of qualifying in the first leg, narrowly missing the cutoff. He'll start 16th.<\/p>\n

The Music City Grand Prix gets underway on Monday at 2am and will take in 80 laps of the downtown Nashville course, with coverage live, ad-free, and exclusively on Stan Sport.<\/a><\/p>\n
