Will Power<\/a> was lucky to only come away with some bent suspension and a sore thumb after a clumsy incident in the dying stages of IndyCar<\/a> practice at the Music City Grand Prix.<\/p>\n

The Team Penske pilot clocked a 1:16.404s on his 17th lap of the Nashville Street Circuit before making a mistake.<\/p>\n

Power locked the left front wheel up, which caused him to understeer and wallop the outside wall, spitting the wheel out of his hands.<\/p>\n

Asked whether it damaged the car, Power replied "It didn't look like it, but I would change the front corner.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"They'll probably change it. You can't sort of have a hit like that. Just got it, locked up a bit, boom.<\/p>\n

"I think if you break it, you're probably in harder," he added.<\/p>\n

"When it grabs, goes all the way around. I think it did it quick. Got the end there. Wasn't terrible.<\/p>\n

As for the thumb, "It's fine. It's fine. Just a little tight."<\/p>\n

Power's quarter-of-a-second margin came as something of a surprise given how tight the margins have been in IndyCar lately.<\/p>\n

Power was streaks ahead of series leader Alex Palou out of the Chip Ganassi Racing camp while McLaren's Alexander Rossi was a surprise bolter in third.<\/p>\n

The Aussie said he might have even gone faster if not for the mistake.<\/p>\n

"A lot of the quick guys did get a run on their reds (soft compound tyres)," explained Power.<\/p>\n

"I was pushing, yeah. I haven't been down runoffs this year. Trying to push the limit a little bit.<\/p>\n

"It was the second run, too. It surprised me that happened. Maybe it was 'cause it was the first lap, but… I didn't go crazy deep. I just sort of grabbed the front, yeah, got to the wall."<\/p>\n

Kiwi compatriots Scott McLaughlin and Scott Dixon wound up ninth and 10th respectively while Marcus Armstrong, another New Zealander, wound up 12th in the 27-car field.<\/p>\n
