Richmond<\/a> midfielder Jacob Hopper had to be dragged from the field during the Tigers' 55-point loss to the Bulldogs<\/a> after suffering a concussion on Friday night.<\/p>\n

With the \ufeffAFL's concussion management guidelines thrust into the limelight after the league slapped Port Adelaide with a $100,000 fine for mismanagement and deviation<\/a>, the response from Richmond's medical staff highlighted the correct application of concussion protocols.<\/p>\n

Hopper was forced from the ground for a head injury assessment (HIA) in the second quarter after playing on following a clash of heads in a tackle with Bulldogs midfielder Adam Treloar.<\/p>\n

Following the incident, the broadcast showed vision of \ufeffthe Tigers' medical team reviewing the Hawk-Eye video to check for signs of concussion.<\/p>\n

Moments later, \ufeffHopper's number was put up on Richmond's interchange board to signal a substitution, although the 26-year-old either shrugged off the directive or missed the message to come to the bench.<\/p>\n

Hopper was then accompanied off the field by a doctor after the next goal.<\/p>\n

He subsequently failed his HIA and was subbed out for \ufeffRhyan Mansell.<\/p>\n

Speaking on Fox Footy at the half-time break, Herald Sun reporter Jon Ralph said Richmond's process showed exactly "how the system should work".<\/p>\n

"[Hopper] clearly felt he was fine after that head knock. They got him down in the rooms after they assessed that vision," he said.<\/p>\n

"He will be very disappointed with it \u2026 but that's what we need to do. Welcome to the new normal under the AFL's concussion rules."<\/p>\n

Under the concussion protocols and the AFL's 12-day stand-down period, Hopper will be unavailable for Richmond's round 22 clash with St Kilda.<\/p>\n

With the loss, the Tigers \ufefffind themselves out of contention for the top eight in 2023.<\/p>\n

The Bulldogs piled on nine goals to two in the opening term to open up a 44-point lead that never looked like being reeled in.<\/p>\n

Youngster \ufeffJamarra Ugle-Hagan starred for the Dogs with an equal career-high five goals.<\/p>\n
