S\ufeffome awkward tension has broken out in the Australian swimming<\/a> team after Kaylee McKeown moved to distance herself from explosive Cate Campbell<\/a> comments.<\/p>\n

Campbell \ufeffripped into America and its swim team<\/a> when appearing on Nine's Today<\/em> earlier this week.<\/p>\n

The veteran Dolphins star was reacting to US broadcaster \ufeffNBC attempting to claim America topped the medal tally at the World Aquatics Championships in Japan.<\/p>\n

Australia trumped the rest of the world easily in number of gold medals won – totalling 13 for the meet – but NBC showed a graphic with USA at the top based on total medals won, including silver and bronze.<\/p>\n

"Such sore losers," Campbell said on Today<\/em> on Monday.<\/p>\n

\"Cate<\/p>\n

"I mean, Australia coming out on top of the world is one thing, but it is just so much sweeter beating America.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"(On) the first night of competition, we did not have to hear Star Spangled Banner<\/em> ring out through the stadium. I cannot tell you how happy that made me.<\/p>\n

"If I (ever) hear that song again it will be too soon.<\/p>\n

"Bring on Paris. That's all I have to say to the US. Stop being sore losers."<\/p>\n

\"McKeown<\/p>\n

Campbell, 31, was not in Japan having only recently made a comeback to the pool.<\/p>\n

McKeown – who won three of Australia's 13 gold medals – was unimpressed by Campbell's baiting of America from thousands of kilometres away.<\/p>\n

"I think everyone is entitled to an opinion, and I just don't agree with how Cate went about expressing her opinion," McKeown, 22, told 2GB's The Ben Fordham Show<\/em><\/a> on Friday.<\/p>\n

\"McKeown<\/p>\n

"I'm all for rivalry and that kind of thing, but there's no need to be nasty about it in some ways.<\/p>\n

"I'm personally not about that. When I saw that I was 'she's not really speaking on (our behalf)'.\ufeff"<\/p>\n

Radio host Fordham asked McKeown whether there was beef between she and Campbell.<\/p>\n

"She can say whatever she likes. We are perfectly fine," McKeown said.<\/p>\n

"I just got asked the question and I said I wouldn't have said it personally.\ufeff"<\/p>\n

McKeown and Campbell will both be striving to represent Australia at next year's Olympic Games Paris 2024.<\/p>\n
