R\ufeffugby league<\/a> legend Ruan Sims<\/a> has revealed plans are in motion to make a minor NRLW<\/a> change which could drastically improve the on-field product.<\/p>\n

While the NRLW has grown to new heights in both competition size and quality this season, head office \ufeffis exploring the possibility of implementing a new ball as early as next year.<\/p>\n

New South Wales men's coach Brad Fittler<\/a> is working with sports brand Steeden \ufeffto manufacture a ball that is smaller than the one currently used, but also a different size and shape to any ball already available.<\/p>\n

"It's something I know the NRL are working on, and Freddy (Fittler) has spoken to Steeden to get a mock-up made," Sims told Wide World of Sports' NRLW Weekly<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

"In the northern hemisphere they trialled a size five ball, and they found that they could pass it further but it didn't fly the same when it was kicked.<\/p>\n

"That's why there has to be a new one made up, and it's between the five and the six sizing.<\/p>\n

"It sort of works out to be like 33.3 centimetres, the circumference, so it's very specific.<\/p>\n

"It seems to be the sweetish spot, so we're going to take a look at the prototypes, test it out, see how it goes.<\/p>\n

"If that is successful, that it can fly as well in a kick, I would love to see that changed.\ufeff"<\/p>\n

Once the new ball is approved and ready to manufacture en masse, Sims wants another change made.<\/p>\n

She says it's time to put microchip technology in the balls in order to help judge forward passes in the professional competitions.<\/p>\n

Forward pass technology has previously been trialled in the NRLW with some success, but has not yet been implemented full-time in any competition.<\/p>\n
