Wallabies coach Eddie Jones<\/a> is hopeful that the \ufefffree flowing Rugby Championship style of play will continue at the Rugby World Cup in France next month.<\/p>\n

Jones noted some "fascinating" developments during the southern hemisphere tournament, noting the ball was in play for 44 minutes of last weekend's Bledisloe Cup opener at the MCG.<\/a><\/p>\n

Generally, big World Cup matches tend to be tighter \ufeffaffairs, often decided via set-piece battles and quality, committed kick-chase.<\/p>\n

That was the formula for South Africa's triumph in 2019 but Jones – whose England team was beaten in that final – sensed a shift in the landscape.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"What we're seeing now is extremes in the game," Jones told reporters after naming halflback Tate McDermott as Wallabies captain for Saturday's Bledisloe Cup rematch.<\/a><\/p>\n

"You know, 44 minutes is a high ball in play for rugby. That's something that people dream about and the interesting thing is everyone said you have to have changes in the laws to get a game right, but you don't have to.<\/p>\n

"The laws are fantastic, and if the referees continually apply consistently and have a theme, which they do at the moment, which is space and speed, then you get a great game of rugby for two teams who wanted to play positive rugby. And I'm sure that most of the World Cup is going to be the same.<\/p>\n

"You've seen the difference in South Africa, the way they're playing at the moment, which has probably brought them back to the field a bit more. They're starting to play a bit more, pass the ball a bit more and that of course can encourage mistakes, which brings you back to the field when you're not kicking the ball 45 times in a game."<\/p>\n

Jones said the presence of highly regarded English referee Wayne Barnes \ufeffin Melbourne was a major reason for the attractive spectacle, won 38-7 by the All Blacks.<\/p>\n

An afternoon kickoff (12.35pm AEST) at Dunedin's Forsyth Barr Stadium, with a roof and superb playing surface, \ufeffsuggests running rugby will again dominate on Saturday.<\/p>\n

But Jones believed things might be different \ufeffwith Karl Dickson – another Englishman – blowing the whistle.<\/p>\n

"The game's changing a lot, I think it's fascinating how the Rugby Championship's been going, the ball in play is up a lot more and that's the way the referees are refereeing, most of the rights go to the attacking team at the moment," Jones observed.<\/p>\n

"The referee on Saturday is a little bit different in that regard because he's a young (41-years-old) referee coming through, and a young referee tends to want to give a penalty in every area, which makes the game a\u00a0bit more inconsistent.<\/p>\n

"And when the game's a bit more inconsistent you might tend to get a bit more kicking in it. So we've got to be equipped for any game, but this is the start of what we hope is the regeneration of Australian rugby.<\/p>\n

"We play our style of game, a bit more bold about the way we play, but also play with some toughness, and we've got some young guys leading the way and we'll see where we can go."<\/p>\n

Jones, who has guided teams to two World Cup finals and was an assistant coach for South Africa's 2007 triumph, had some further predictions for France.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"Generally the World Cups have a pattern that up until the quarter-final you do get a lot more play and you do get the referees advantaging attacking play," he said.<\/p>\n

"And then once you get to the quarter-final, particularly semi-final and final, things tend to tighten up a lot more. And I don't think it'd be any different, but I think it might be more extreme."<\/p>\n
