With reports the Gold Coast Suns<\/a> are gearing up to sign three-time premiership coach Damien Hardwick<\/a> to a five-year deal to coach the club from next season<\/a>, questions have been raised as to how much ambassadorial money from the AFL will be used to fund the contract.<\/p>\n

The AFL's ambassador fund is used as an incentive for players and coaches to contribute towards promoting the game in ways outside of their conventional role.<\/p>\n

"For the same footy club, the AFL\ufeff paid a million dollars of Karmichael Hunt's contract as a player going back to 10 years. I would imagine that would be the starting point for the Damien Hardwick number," leading journalist Damien Barrett told Nine's Footy Classified<\/em> on Wednesday night.<\/p>\n

The AFL's supply of ambassador money to push game development on the Gold Coast was last talked bout when Alastair Clarkson was approached for the top job last year.<\/p>\n

\ufeff"Whatever money Alastair Clarkson was offered by the Gold Coast and the AFL, it'll be the same, if not more, [for Hardwick],".<\/p>\n

At the time\ufeff, the AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan denied that Clarkson would receive ambassadorial money for the role.<\/p>\n

With CEO Mark Evans flying to Europe to meet with Hardwick while he holidays in Italy, Sam McClure unpacked the lengths the Suns are going to to lock down their man.<\/p>\n

"What we're calling this is 'The Italian job'," he said.<\/p>\n

"Mark Evans has flown overnight into Milan, south of that is a little town, a beautiful town on the Riviera … where Damien Hardwick and his partner are currently holidaying.<\/p>\n

"This is how serious the Gold Coast Suns are about \ufefftrying to get Damien Hardwick to be the coach of their football club from next year.<\/p>\n

"Cinque Terre is \ufeffItalian for five towns and Mark Evans does not want to be leaving there without a five-year contract signed, sealed, and delivered from Damien Hardwick."<\/p>\n

According to \ufeffMcClure, after a phone call between Hardwick and senior members of the Gold Coast Suns last week, the former Richmond coach is "interested" in becoming the club's fourth coach since its inception.<\/p>\n

In joining a few dots, \ufeffit also appears there is a "strong \ufeffassociation" to get Hardwick to the club.<\/p>\n

"Paul Connors\ufeff, one of the leading sports agents, and Robbie D'Orazio have players up on the Gold Coast – Noah Anderson, Ben King, Rory Atkins [and] Ben Ainsworth just to name a few – they are also the management group of Damien Hardwick," former Collingwood president Eddie McGuire said.<\/p>\n

"There's been a really strong \ufeffassociation between that group to help the Gold Coast Suns and this is a beautiful coming together of the team.<\/p>\n

"Gun players want a gun coach \ufeffand his name is Damien Hardwick."<\/p>\n

The super coach announced his resignation as senior coach of Richmond<\/a> effective immediately in May, \ufeffending his 14-year tenure at the club.<\/p>\n

In his reasoning, Hardwick said the motivation required to coach was becoming "a little too much" before coming to the realisation that he had no desire to coach next season.<\/p>\n
