Four-time Olympian<\/a> Cate Campbell<\/a> has accused the USA of being "sore losers" after American broadcasters aired an alternate World Aquatics Championships<\/a> medal tally that had the Americans on top.<\/p>\n

US-broadcaster NBC decided to air a medal tally prioritising the total number of medals won, rather than the number of golds, which put the USA comfortably ahead of Australia.<\/p>\n

Australia would eventually top the real medal tally with 13 gold, over the US with seven and China with five.<\/p>\n

"Such sore losers," Campbell said on Nine's Today<\/em> on Monday morning.<\/p>\n

"I mean, Australia coming out on top of the world is one thing, but it is just so much sweeter beating America.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

"(On) the first night of competition, we did not have to hear 'Star Spangled Banner' ring out through the stadium. I cannot tell you how happy that made me.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"If I (ever) hear that song again it will be too soon.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"Bring on Paris. That's all I have to say to the US. Stop being sore losers."<\/p>\n

Campbell also revealed the US team employs a cowbell and their infamous chant to rev up their swimmers in the warm-up areas before the race.<\/p>\n

"The US have this internal cowbell they ring. As someone leaves to go to the competition pool, they ring out, 'USA, USA'," she said.<\/p>\n

"I have never wanted to punch someone more and steal the cowbell. I really hope someone did."<\/p>\n

Campbell went on to praise the wider Dolphins team, with superstar teen Mollie O'Callaghan \u2013 whom she will be competing against for a spot on the Paris 2024 team \u2013 her standout performer.<\/p>\n

"She won the 200m freestyle and had to beat our great Ariarne Titmus to do that, and she broke the oldest female world record to do that, and she's only 19," Campbell said.<\/p>\n

"So, it's a little bit scary because I have to compete with her in the women's 100m freestyle which she also won."<\/p>\n

On the final night of competition, another 19-year-old in Sam Short announced himself as Australia's next long-distance king after securing bronze in the 1500m freestyle.<\/p>\n

He finished in a time of 14:37.28 \u2013 only 5.74 seconds off gold, won by Tunisian Ahmed Hafnaoui.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"He is kind of taking on the mantle of being that distance king \u2026 taking over from legends like Grant Hackett and Ian Thorpe," Campbell said.<\/p>\n

Elsewhere, Shayna Jack claimed her first individual medal at a major championships since her return from a two-year doping ban, claiming silver in the final of the 50m freestyle.<\/p>\n
