Tributes have poured in for England paceman Stuart Broad<\/a> after he stunned the cricket world by announcing his retirement from international cricket.<\/p>\n

Broad has been the pick of England's bowlers during the Ashes, but opted to go out on a high, announcing that the fifth Test against Australia will be the last of his storied career<\/a> at the end of play on day three.<\/p>\n

The 36-year-old will retire as England's most prolific Ashes<\/a> bowler of all-time\ufeff with 151 wickets to date, trailing only Australian titans Shane Warne (195) and Glenn McGrath (157) on the all-time Ashes wickets list.<\/p>\n

McGrath showered praise on the Englishman after his decision late on day three of the fifth Test.<\/p>\n

\ufeff"He loves the big moments, he loves the pressure and that is the sign of a true champion," he told the BBC.<\/p>\n

"He has been incredible for England for a long, long time."<\/p>\n

Cricketers often fail to pick the right time to retire, but Broad was praised for going out on top by former England captain Michael Atherton, who hailed the call as a "good decision".<\/p>\n

"He's got more Ashes wickets than anybody else in an England shirt, and he himself says the Ashes have brought out the best in him. I think in the end that's why he's decided to go (out) here.<\/p>\n

"It's a good decision, by the way. It's the one thing every cricketer is in control of, when they go, and I think he's made a good choice here.<\/p>\n

"The Oval, the Ashes, Australia. He's going to get a great ovation tomorrow when he walks out with Jimmy Anderson, and then he's got a chance to help bowl England to victory.<\/p>\n

"So what could be a better place and a better time to go out at 37 years of age? He's chosen his moment wisely and he can look back with a great deal of pride on a fantastic career."<\/p>\n

While Broad has become renowned for his fiery nature and gamesmanship throughout his 167 Tests, England great Nasser Hussain also lauded his cricket smarts.<\/p>\n

"When you sit down and talk to him about the spells he's bowled, they mean more to him because they went on to win games and win Ashes series.<\/p>\n

"The other thing about Stuart is that he's a very, very bright bowler. I have interviewed Stuart or sat next to him in the box and he will talk about seam positions and wrist positions and setting up batters.<\/p>\n

"He is the complete article – the fitness, the hunger, the competitiveness, the skill, and he's been very clever and bright about the skill of bowling."<\/p>\n

While Broad is retiring, his long-time running mate, James Anderson, who is four years his senior, will continue going.<\/p>\n

Anderson was brought to tears when discussing Broad's retirement.<\/p>\n

"Yeah absolutely (I'm going to miss him)," he said.<\/p>\n

"He's my best mate. It's been brilliant, he's been there for me all the time."<\/p>\n

The two best mates will stride out together for one last batting partnership together as England looks to add to its lead of 377 to start day four, before hoping to bowl England to one last Ashes victory together in Australia's second innings.<\/p>\n
