A unique set of circumstances may mean Australia<\/a> does not field a full strength squad at next year's World Aquatics Championships<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The knock-on effect of the COVID-19 pandemic meant this year's meet in Fukuoka was twice postponed.<\/p>\n

Initially, that event was to take place in 2021 but was pushed to 2022 and once more to 2023 due to Japan's stringent response to the coronavirus.<\/p>\n

The 2024 edition of the World Aquatics Championships in Doha was originally slated for 2023 but was pushed back due to the Fukuoka rescheduling.<\/p>\n

That will mean the World Championships and Olympic Games take place in the same year.<\/p>\n

What it means for Dolphins selectors is the current throng of athletes might only compete at Paris and opt to miss Doha.<\/p>\n

"The World Champs is just fitted in because of COVID and they obviously had a deal done," Swimming Australia head coach Rohan Taylor told Nine's Sports Sunday<\/em>.<\/p>\n

"What we're doing is; the athletes on this team will have the option to go if they feel \u2013 them\u00a0and their coaches \u2013 feel it's good for their preparation.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\"Aussie\u00a0teen\u00a0stuns\u00a0Titmus\u00a0sets\u00a0WR\u00a0to\u00a0win\u00a0gold\"<\/p>\n

"If they opt out of it, the spots are available. We have a team over in the US swimming right now and we'll have other teams, juniors, and other teams swimming at meets later this year.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"If we do get people who qualify, they'll have the option to go but we'll only take a small team and it'll be a very short trip.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"I would think that only those that really need a little bit more exposure to international competition will go."<\/p>\n

One consideration is dependent on how the team fares in the relay.<\/p>\n

Pending their results, that will determine whether of not the team sends a squad to Doha.<\/p>\n

"If we do need to qualify a relay for the Olympics, we'll have to send a relay. Hopefully tonight we can confirm we've got them all through," Taylor explained.<\/p>\n

"Definitely Paris is our focus and the World Champs will be for those that really need that opportunity, but we're not going to put a big emphasis on it."<\/p>\n
