Former Australian quick Ryan Harris has backed calls to have harsher penalties for slow over rates as the cricket world continues to rage in the aftermath of the first ODI<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Last Friday's SCG one-dayer between Australia and India was marred by the fact the match finished 59 minutes late, with the final ball being bowled at 11:09pm.<\/p>\n

While the International Cricket Council chose not to deduct points from either side in the race to qualify for the 2023 ODI World Cup, the game's governing body did fine India 20 percent of their match fee<\/a>.<\/p>\n

But Harris, who played a combined 51 international matches across three formats, says the ICC must consider a host of solutions to crack down harder on time-wasting.<\/p>\n

"There's a number of things you can do (to speed things up)," Harris said on SEN's Breakfast with Vossy<\/em>.<\/p>\n

"Financially, you make it (the consequences) bigger for individuals and team members. You can even have penalty runs: give them 15 or 20 penalty runs, or five or 10 penalty runs. Or you just suspend players: start with the captain and vice-captain. Most people like their money so if you're putting big financial fines on each individual player, not just the captain, I'm sure they would be running through the overs a bit quicker."<\/p>\n

India's 50 overs in the field was 36 minutes over time in the opening match and even the backlash to that effort didn't result in a huge improvement in last night's second match, with the visitors again over schedule, this time by 22 minutes.<\/p>\n

Despite the huge discrepancy, India were deemed to be just one over too slow in the series-opener once the ICC had factored in Australia's glove changes, a player's injury, the ball having to be cleaned and pitch invaders.<\/p>\n

The 11:09pm finish of the first match meant the last two overs were completed without stadium sound because the game had passed the SCG's curfew.<\/p>\n

Leg-spinning great Shane Warne<\/a>, former England captain Michael Vaughan and veteran Indian cricket broadcaster Harsha Bhogle are among a host of leading commentators who've blasted India's lack of urgency in the middle.<\/p>\n

Harris was blunt in his assessment of the fiasco.<\/p>\n

"That shouldn't be happening. What was it? A total of 59 minutes overtime," Harris said.<\/p>\n

"Granted there are boundaries and a lot of sixes being hit, which takes a little bit of time, but 59 minutes is a long time overtime."<\/p>\n

Australia will shoot for a 3-0 series clean-sweep at Manuka Oval on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
