IndyCar Series<\/a> officials are being urged to act quicker after a tyre came loose and wandered into the path of several cars at high speed before the race was neutralised.<\/p>\n

Sting Ray Robb had just completed a pit stop when he returned to the track without his left rear wheel secured.<\/p>\n

The wheel came adrift and rode up the banking before coming to a rest on the apron<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Several cars swerved to nose the errant wheel before the yellow flag was flown by race officials. Robb was disqualified from the race as a result.<\/p>\n

Meyer Shank Racing stand-in driver Conor Daly was among those to narrowly miss the rogue wheel.<\/p>\n

Speaking on his Dirty Mo Media podcast Speed Street<\/em>, the Indianapolis native said he was surprised it took so long for the yellow to come out.<\/p>\n

From the time the wheel came loose to the yellow being thrown was about eight seconds, in which time 11 cars had already driven past it.<\/p>\n

"I don't know what it is, but my goodness gracious \u2013 I tell you what, I've got to avoid these tyres," said Daly.<\/p>\n

"I almost ended up with a tyre directly in my lap. That was not fun. Crazy to see that tyre, I don't know (why) we didn't go yellow quicker.<\/p>\n

"I feel like it should've been yellow as soon as that car was limping back to the pits.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"I definitely think there are going to be some questions about that. I just happened to yank the wheel left."<\/p>\n

It's not the first time Daly has had an on-track encounter with a tyre.<\/p>\n

During the 2021 Indianapolis 500, a wheel came loose from Graham Rahal's car as he exit pit lane.\u00a0<\/p>\n

As Rahal spun out and slammed into the wall, Daly came through and drove into the bouncing wheel as it came across the track.<\/p>\n

"This time I saw it, Indy two years ago, I never saw the tyre, it basically came from the sky like an alien," Daly explained.<\/p>\n

"With this one, I was like 'Oh no!'"<\/p>\n

Daly feared his quick reaction would be to his detriment as the sudden input threatened to send his car into a spin.<\/p>\n

"Because these cars are just so on edge, you can't just turn them, if you turn them you spin sometimes," said Daly.<\/p>\n

"I knew I had a McLaren, I don't know if it was (Alexander) Rossi or (Felix) Rosenqvist (next to me), I basically just got on the brakes and yanked the wheel left, just at the last second.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"I was looking at the onboard video, I must've missed it by six inches.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"I'm also blown away by whoever was on my outside also missed it!\u00a0<\/p>\n

"Kudos to both of us. That was a crazy one. It was so dangerous, man."<\/p>\n

The IndyCar Series returns on August 7 for the Music City Grand Prix in Nashville.<\/p>\n
