Just days after producing what some judged as his worst Test performance ever, Pat Cummins<\/a> has put Australia<\/a> in a strong position to win their first Ashes<\/a> series on England<\/a> soil in more than two decades.<\/p>\n

While his fielding positions in the first session \u2013 particularly against the England openers \u2013 were still fairly defensive, his decision to bowl first on an Oval wicket that had enough juice to keep it interesting right now looks like a masterstroke.<\/p>\n

He then produced probably his best bowling spell of the series with his first of the day. He beat the bat on numerous occasions, and continuously punished Zak Crawley's inside thigh, before finally dismissing him for 22 courtesy of a Steve Smith catch at slip.<\/p>\n

\ufeffBefore that, Cummins was luckless not to snag a wicket with his first ball of the match, when David Warner grassed a thick Ben Duckett edge at slip.<\/p>\n

Cummins \u2013 after winning his first toss of the series \u2013 elected to bowl. A decision that looked like it might have been the wrong one as England raced to 62 at nearly a run a ball before Mitch Marsh had Duckett caught behind.<\/p>\n

Cummins then made it a double blow when he picked up Crawley only four balls later, before Joe Root was bowled by Josh Hazlewood a short time later.<\/p>\n

But the Aussies dropped five chances \u2013 the most costly of which was Alex Carey's against Harry Brook, when the England No.5 was in single figures. He went on to make 85.<\/p>\n

On Nine's coverage of the Ashes, former Aussie batter Callum Ferguson said Cummins should have considered opening the spell, instead of Hazlewood or Mitchell Starc.<\/p>\n

"I just wonder whether we could have looked at him with the new ball," Ferguson said.<\/p>\n

"When he came on, he made things happen. Hit a good hard length and really challenged that sort of fourth stump, fifth stump line."<\/p>\n

On Monday, former Australian Test\ufeff captain Ian Chappell branded some of Pat Cummins' tactics in Manchester "stupidity"<\/a>.<\/p>\n

He criticised Cummins' \ufeffdecision to protect the boundary early in the innings of top-order batters, happy to give up plenty of singles, which only allowed them the opportunity to ease into their innings.<\/p>\n

At times during Zak Crawley's innings at Old Trafford, Cummins and his teammates flapped their arms helplessly as he blasted his way to \ufeffwhat was all but a match-winning 189.<\/p>\n

But on the other side, The Telegraph (UK) declared England's day one performance at The Oval as their worst of the series.<\/p>\n

"This was the most disappointing day of the series from the England batsmen given the manner of dismissals, the lives gifted by tired Australian catchers and Pat Cummins' reticence with his fields," wrote their chief cricket writer, Nick Hoult.<\/p>\n

Indeed, two England batters played on, and two tail enders were caught trying to play big shots to short bowling.\ufeff<\/p>\n

Australia will resume on day two at the Oval at 1-61, with play to get underway at 8pm (AEST).<\/p>\n
