Kyle Chalmers<\/a> looks on track to claim his first individual world championship title, putting world record holder David Popovici on notice after easing into the 100-metre freestyle semi-finals.<\/p>\n

Chalmers – who has never won a world long course title – registered his fastest-ever heat swim at the World Aquatics Championships<\/a> in Fukuoka on Wednesday, touching the wall at 47.41, just shy of his personal best mark of 47.08.<\/p>\n

Fellow Dolphin Flynn Southam will join Chalmers in the 100-metre semis after ranking 11th in the heats with a time of 48.18.<\/p>\n

Chalmers will enter the semis as the third-fastest qualifier, behind Englishman Matthew Richards \u2014 who won gold in the 200-metre freestyle on Tuesday night \u2014 and American Jack Alexy.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"It was good, it's my fastest heat swim I have ever done," Chalmers said.<\/p>\n

\"FUKUOKA,<\/p>\n

"For me it's about getting through the rounds … tonight \u2014 hopefully, it will be a bit faster, at night time I'm a whole lot faster."<\/p>\n

Romanian Popovici qualified sixth-fastest through the heats in a time of 47.90.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The 18-year-old has become one of the biggest names in swimming since his success during last year's World Championships, but surprisingly failed to reach the podium in a shock 200-metre final on Tuesday night.<\/p>\n

When asked if he had taken notice of Popovici's decline during the 200m final, Chalmers replied: "I'd be lying if I said I didn't."<\/p>\n

"Obviously, (Popovici) faded a little bit, but I think he's young and he'll learn from that and be better for it in the 100," he said.<\/p>\n

"No one is invincible.<\/p>\n

\"FUKUOKA,<\/p>\n

"I have been in the sport a long time and have learnt that through my years, that is a lesson he is probably starting to learn now."<\/p>\n

Popovici told reporters he is not at his best due to his focus being on completing his final high school exams back in Romania.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The world record holder revealed he "felt awful" following his heat swim and aims to improve his race in time for the finals.<\/p>\n

"It felt awful, but that means we can improve on something," Popovici said.<\/p>\n

"That is a good thing, because if you have the absolute perfect race and you have nothing else to improve, you know that you've basically reached the top, the limit, you can do nothing better from there on.<\/p>\n

"So I'm glad it happened now and I'm sure it has a meaning that I'm going to learn from it."<\/p>\n
