A slip of the tongue from young Matildas<\/a> \ufeffmidfielder Kyra Cooney-Cross has the nation questioning the severity of star captain Sam Kerr's left calf injury<\/a>, on the eve of their second group stage match against Nigeria.<\/p>\n

Cooney-Cross told reporters on Monday that Kerr<\/a> had torn her calf, a more serious injury than a strain, before Australia's 1-0 win over Ireland<\/a> to open \ufefftheir FIFA Women's World Cup campaign on home soil.<\/p>\n

"It's unfortunate that Sam tore her calf before the game, but I think we're just focusing on Nigeria," Cooney-Cross said on Monday.<\/p>\n

"Sam's doing her own thing to get back as quick as possible and that's also important."<\/p>\n

The use of the word "tore" sent shockwaves through the nation, with fears that Kerr's injury is being downplayed by the Matildas.<\/p>\n

But Football Australia was quick to correct the young midfielder's slip up, releasing a statement denying the claim.<\/p>\n

The statement did not confirm when Kerr would return.\ufeff<\/p>\n

The slip up is still causing unease, considering how important Kerr's role is to the Matildas' attack, with speculation swirling around whether the skipper will even pull on the boots this tournament.<\/p>\n

Kerr was still sidelined during Monday's session in Brisbane, spotted with a compression bandage on her calf.\ufeff<\/p>\n

However teammate Katrina Gorry said the Matildas will continue to take her absence in their stride.<\/p>\n

"We're not looking at it as a blow for the team," Gorry said.<\/p>\n

"We have incredible players all across the park, so for us it's about focusing on the players that we do have.<\/p>\n

"We know Sammy's always next to us, always supporting us. It gives us a bit of fire in our belly to keep on going out there, working hard, and in the last minutes of the game putting that extra effort in for her.<\/p>\n

"We'll need her in the back end of this tournament, so as long as she's staying on her plan then we'll stay on ours and we'll get her there."\ufeff<\/p>\n

The Matildas face Nigeria at Suncorp Stadium on Thursday night.\ufeff<\/p>\n
