Former Australian captain Ian Chappell<\/a> has branded some of Pat Cummins<\/a>' tactical game "stupidity", but whacked calls for the champion paceman to quit as skipper.<\/p>\n

Cummins has never faced a tougher challenge as captain than on day two of the fourth Ashes Test<\/a>, in which relentless rain forced a draw after the English outplayed the Australians emphatically<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Day two saw England opener Zak Crawley blast the fastest-ever Test 150 scored at Old Trafford\ufeff, setting the hosts on their way to amassing 592 all out and a lead of 275 runs.<\/p>\n

As Crawley swung his way to 189 runs from 182 balls,\ufeff Cummins grew increasingly flustered and appeared trapped in a never-ending quest for answers.<\/p>\n

He opted for short-pitched bowling and an abundance of men on the boundary, at one stage even setting up a cordon of catchers at deep third man and hoping Crawley would ping the ball in the direction of those fielders.<\/p>\n

Cummins flapped his arms helplessly and so did many of his teammates.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"The performances have been going down hill," Chappell told Wide World of Sports.<\/p>\n

"I mean, the bouncer barrage is stupidity. What's the definition of insanity? When you keep doing the same thing and expect a different result. Both sides have done it a bit.<\/p>\n

"The first thing you've got to do … certainly in Test cricket is you've got to keep trying to get guys out. If you put nine on the boundary that's really not designed to get people out \u2014 not good batsmen out anyhow.<\/p>\n

"And the other thing is if you're going to give good players easy singles early in their innings, that's also not designed to have great success.<\/p>\n

"Some of the tactics I've thought have been pretty silly. They got away with it in this Test, but you can't keep getting away with it\ufeff."<\/p>\n

On day two of the Old Trafford Test, Darren Berry, a former wicketkeeper who played first-class cricket with South Australia and Victoria,\ufeff tipped Cummins to "resign" from the captaincy after the series.<\/p>\n

"This is absolutely insane to anyone watching this shit with half a clue about the game," read a part of a Twitter post by Berry.<\/p>\n

Chappell swiped that talk.<\/p>\n

"Well, it's easy to sack someone but you've got to replace him with someone better. So, who's his replacement? Ask Darren Berry that," Chappell said.<\/p>\n

"I think Pat Cummins was the right choice.<\/p>\n

"Some of his tactics in this series I would question, but the fact that none of the senior players have been speaking up and saying, 'Mate, this is stupid' … Where the hell are they?<\/p>\n

"Darren Berry can have his opinion about Cummins, but you've got to come up with an alternative. It's no good just saying, 'This is no good'. OK, say it's no good, but say, 'This is what the alternative is'. Don't just mouth off and say get rid of him.<\/p>\n

"I think Pat Cummins was the right choice at the time and I haven't seen a reason to promote another captain.\ufeff"<\/p>\n

Of the 11 Australians selected for the Old Trafford match, five have played more Tests\ufeff than Cummins' 54: David Warner (108), Steve Smith (101), Mitchell Starc (81), Usman Khawaja (65) and Josh Hazlewood (62).<\/p>\n

Travis Head has only played 41 Tests, but he captains South Australia when he turns out for his state side and was touted by Shane Warne as a future Test skipper.<\/p>\n

"You don't want too many cooks; the captain has to run the show," Chappell said.<\/p>\n

"But if you're doing something that's not very smart it's up to the senior players to speak up and let him know, 'Mate, this is silly, let's try something else'. I didn't see any of that. Whether there's a whole lot of people putting their bib in, I dunno; you don't know that unless you're there.<\/p>\n

"But all I'd say is as captain you've got to run the show. You generally run the show with the help of a few experienced guys; the experienced guys have got to be telling you when it's not working, and the other thing about it is it's pretty obvious when it's not working."<\/p>\n

The fifth and final Test will get underway on Thursday at The Oval, where Australia will be pushing for its first Ashes series win on English soil since 2001.<\/p>\n
