Former Collingwood president Eddie McGuire<\/a> and Geelong champion Jimmy Bartel<\/a> fear perpetrators sending anonymous racist messages to AFL players are not being punished severely enough.<\/p>\n

It comes after Port Adelaide forward Willie Rioli received racist backlash via Instagram<\/a>, following a fourth-term altercation between Rioli and Magpie Nathan Murphy in the Power's two-point loss to Collingwood on Saturday night.<\/p>\n

"It was absolutely racism at its worst," McGuire said on Nine's Eddie and Jimmy<\/em><\/a> podcast.<\/p>\n

"You have to look at who the people are. Willie Rioli wacked someone in a game of football, he shouldn't have to cop that."<\/p>\n

Bartel says the traditional way of calling out racism in the game is a broken system, with \ufeffthe offenders still able to hide behind a screen.<\/p>\n

"We quite rightly call it out, it's unacceptable, but they'd (perpetrators) be wanting this to be called out because they'd be looking at today's news cycle and having a chuckle, saying 'look, see that's what I did'," Bartel said on Nine's Eddie and Jimmy<\/em> podcast.<\/p>\n

"Until social media giants, especially in this country create points of ID, or call it a social media licence … it's going to spin around and around and around."<\/p>\n

McGuire said there was "too much edge" in the racist comments directed at Rioli, but is urging \ufeffthe league to put a stronger plan in place to shut down and call out culprits.<\/p>\n

"(There was) too much edge in that," McGuire said.<\/p>\n

"In that situation, you want to have a bit of rehabilitation involved, but at the same time, how many times to you have to tell people?<\/p>\n

"Are we ever going to be able to stop that?<\/p>\n

"Let's hope the AFL get to the bottom of it and people stand up and are made accountable."<\/p>\n
