F\ufefformer England Test<\/a> cricketer turned prominent commentator David Lloyd has rubbished calls for Pat Cummins<\/a> to miss the fifth Ashes<\/a> match.<\/p>\n

The knives have been out for the Australian skipper after the hosts piled on 592 runs in their first and only innings at Old Trafford, before rain saved the visitors and a draw was called<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\ufeffCummins looked lost and had little answer for England, as the Aussies risked losing in Manchester and levelling the series at 2-2. Luckily, the draw means Australia can't lose the series, and will retain the urn.<\/p>\n

The appointment of Cummins 18 months ago was met with concern and criticism, given fast bowlers are rarely handed the responsibility in Test cricket.<\/p>\n

His mistakes on day two at Old Trafford only allowed that criticism to resurface<\/a>, with former Australian professional Darren Berry tipping Cummins to quit as skipper following this series.<\/p>\n

Former England captain Nasser Hussain noted in commentary, "You look down today and there have been a lot of cricketers waving their arms around trying to help their captain."<\/p>\n

While Lloyd concedes Cummins does appear to be struggling, he hosed down a suggestion Australia should rest its skipper for the fifth match at The Oval, starting Thursday.<\/p>\n

"I'd say OK, we've had a poor game, a real bad game, which can happen to any team, and we start again – the slate is clean.<\/p>\n

"I wouldn't jettison a captain (in) because he's had a bad game and the team has had a bad game, I just wouldn't do that."<\/p>\n

\ufeffLloyd also defended England captain Ben Stokes for refusing to declare at Old Trafford despite the promise of rain impacting the later days of the match.<\/p>\n

In the end the hosts fell only five wickets – and possibly a few catch-up runs – \ufeffshort of victory and a chance to win the series at The Oval.<\/p>\n

Lloyd pointed out Stokes wanted to grind Australia, and Cummins, into the dirt rather than declare and allow the opposition some reprieve.<\/p>\n

"They were absolutely on their knees, Australia," Lloyd said.<\/p>\n

"Arms flying everywhere, not a clue as to who is captaining the side. Certainly the captain went AWOL.<\/p>\n

"You can't predict the weather. We've had a shocking day.\ufeff"<\/p>\n

England must win at The Oval to avoid a first Ashes series defeat at home since 2001.\ufeff<\/p>\n
