Josef Newgarden has taken aim at IndyCar's<\/a> slowest drivers, suggesting they should expect retaliation if they continue what he believes is over-the-top defence.<\/p>\n

The Team Penske driver put on a clinic at Iowa Speedway, winning the first leg of the double-header for his fifth win at the short oval.<\/a><\/p>\n

However, his run to the chequered flag nearly came undone when lapped traffic got in his way in the dying stages.<\/p>\n

Stan Sport is the only place to watch the 2023 IndyCar Series, featuring Will Power, Scott McLaughlin and Scott Dixon. <\/strong><\/em>All the action streaming ad free, live and on demand<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/em><\/p>\n

Teammate Scott McLaughlin<\/a> got within range of Newgarden just shy of the finish but eventually settled for second.\u00a0<\/p>\n

This year's Indianapolis 500 winner was visibly frustrated post-race and could be heard saying "Oh my god, the f—— people racing me\u2026" before audio levels were wound down.<\/p>\n

Of the 28 cars, just five of them finished on the lead lap after 250 laps.<\/p>\n

The two-time series winner detailed his frustrations, suggesting some drivers would be spoken to.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Although he said it was fair game for drivers on the same lap to battle among themselves and others to try and get their lap back, others he said defended too hard.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"It's one thing if you're leading the race. If you're leading the race, you're really within your right. If you're fighting with people around you, seventh, eighth, ninth place, you're all fighting. You're within your right to fight as hard as possible," Newgarden explained.<\/p>\n

"I think, the way the rule was written, it's also legal for them to fight to the death to stay on the lead lap in front of the leader. It is legal. I'm just telling you you're not making any friends when you do it.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"There's 20 laps to go in the race, and I was getting driven like it was literally to the death for the end of the Indy 500. It was just crazy. I couldn't believe the way people were mirror driving.<\/p>\n

"I've never seen it that bad here. Normally if you're the leader, you're not getting a handout, but you're at least getting the courtesy that you are the leader and you're about to get lapped.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"You don't have to pull over, but just don't be aggressive and weave in front of the leader, block the leader, chop the leader.<\/p>\n

"Like there's just a point where you've got to understand that that comes back around. If you do that to someone, I'm going to fence you the next time I see you. If you're the leader the next time, I am going to do you so dirty if you did that to me.<\/p>\n

"It's common sense. Everybody in the paddock knows it. For whatever reason, there's just people who just can't get it.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"You know what, if they can't learn it by now, they'll probably never learn. I guess where I'm going with this, you can tell I'm frustrated by it, which a lot of people are.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"I can't change people's behaviour. If they're going to continue to do that, I have to study and figure out how to counteract it because that's how they're going to play.<\/p>\n

"I'm going to assume they're going to play like that tomorrow, and I've got to be in a better position and better equipped to handle it."<\/p>\n

McLaughlin echoed that sentiment in a separate press conference, expressing his frustrations at the level of "mirror driving" on track.<\/p>\n

He wouldn't be drawn on exactly who he would speak to, nor world Newgarden.<\/p>\n

"I'll go talk to some people too," said this year's Indianapolis 500 winner.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"They need to know. Look, it's not cool. It's not cool. If you want to play that game, that's fine, but you should be thinking long-term."<\/p>\n
