Oscar Piastri<\/a> believes he stands a good chance to score his first Formula 1<\/a> podium with McLaren<\/a> after qualifying fourth at the Hungarian Grand Prix.\u00a0<\/p>\n

It seems upgrades to the MCL60 at the Silverstone Grand Prix weren't a one-trick wonder and have continued to pay dividends at the Hungaroring.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The young Australian was only beaten by seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton<\/a> in a shock result for Mercedes<\/a>, Red Bull's<\/a> two-time champion Max Verstappen<\/a>, and McLaren stablemate Lando Norris<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It's reason to be optimistic with high tyre wear expected to factor into pit stop strategy for what could be a minimum two-stop race.<\/p>\n

"We'll try our best," said Piastri after qualifying.<\/p>\n

\"Oscar<\/p>\n

"I think we can go into it realistically trying to challenge for the top three now. We've seen this weekend how tight everyone has been, including Red Bull.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"We'll see what we can do, try and get that podium. It's going to be a very different race to Silverstone.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"A lot hotter. A lot more tyre deg. Probably more pit stops as well. We'll see what happens."<\/p>\n

Piastri admitted he wasn't capable of putting together a lap that would have challenged the top three.<\/p>\n

\"Oscar<\/p>\n

The Melburnian wound up three tenths adrift of the pole position time while the top three were split by less than 0.09s.<\/p>\n

"Happy, very happy," said Piastri.<\/p>\n

"I think it's been a very encouraging day for the whole team to be at the front once again.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"I think for myself, it wasn't the cleanest of Q3 laps, but to challenge the top three would be difficult.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"I would have had to put a very good lap together so I'm pretty happy with P4. We'll see what we can do tomorrow, but all in all it's been a good day."<\/p>\n

Compatriot Daniel Ricciardo was impressive too, making it through to Q2 and crucially beating teammate Yuki Tsunoda who didn't advance past Q1.<\/p>\n

The Perth product wore a smile as wide as his AlphaTauri AT04 is long, signalling a return of the happy-go-lucky larrikin.<\/p>\n

"I feel happy, I do," said Ricciardo.<\/p>\n

"Obviously it was hard coming into the weekend knowing what position would make me happy.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"In a way, right now, the position\u2026 it's somewhat irrelevant. I think the main thing for me was to get back in and feel good again behind the wheel of a race car and obviously try to get up to speed as quick as I could with the AlphaTauri.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"For that, I feel like I've made some good progress in two days running. As long as we keep progressing from here then I'll continue to remain content."<\/p>\n

The Formula 1 Hungarian Grand Prix at the Hungaroring gets underway at 11pm on Sunday.<\/p>\n
