Scott McLaughlin<\/a> has shown his mettle on one of IndyCar's<\/a> toughest ovals, finishing second to teammate Josef Newgarden at Iowa Speedway.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The first leg of the 250-lap double-header was dominated by Team Penske, who led 1-2-3 for part of the race.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Australia's Will Power<\/a> initially controlled proceedings, leading 119 laps. However, the decisive pass came on 121 when Power got high into turn one and opened the door for stablemate Newgarden to cruise through.<\/p>\n

From there, Newgarden was largely unchallenged as he went on to lead 129 laps and claim his fifth win at the seven-eighths of a mile oval.<\/p>\n

"That's a great day. My team, they're just unbelievable," said Newgarden.<\/p>\n

"They always give me a great car. I show up every weekend and I feel like I've got the best of the best behind me. Team Penske, I'm proud to be part of this team."<\/p>\n

Despite the win, Newgarden was left frustrated after a finish that was too close for comfort.<\/p>\n

Lapped traffic baulked the two-time champion and allowed teammate McLaughlin to range up and come close to mounting a challenge with five laps to go.<\/p>\n

"It's tough in IndyCar," said Newgarden.<\/p>\n

"These guys that are about to go a lap down always run the leader really hard and that's the name of the game.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"It's legal, but man it's a little frustrating at times and it's gotten worse. It was much worse here than I've ever had it.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"I'm going to study the tape, I'm going to be better tomorrow, because if that's how it's going to be then I have to elevate my game for race two."<\/p>\n

McLaughlin was a factor early on and regularly challenged Power for the lead until the Kiwi was passed by Newgarden on lap 95.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"When I saw him coming, I was like 'Oh, this old mate'," said McLaughlin.<\/p>\n

"Hey, Bus Bros one-two, so not bad. The car was great today. The team gave me a great car.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"I have to thank Josef, and congrats to him for winning the race, but during the week we sat down together and really went over everything. Man, it helped me today.<\/p>\n

"I learned a ton today. I badly want to beat that guy. I'm going to try everything to beat him. He's the epitome of a great teammate. I appreciate the help he's giving me."<\/p>\n

Despite leading the second most laps of anyone, Power faded to fifth.<\/p>\n

He had a touch-and-go moment when he slid up the road and grazed the wall at the final turn on lap 121, which dropped him from second to fourth.<\/p>\n

The two-time series winner spent the rest of the race fighting for the final spot on the podium but eventually fell behind McLaren's Pato O'Ward and Marcus Ericsson of Chip Ganassi Racing.\u00a0<\/p>\n

It was an otherwise uneventful race with just one yellow flag interruption on lap 152 when Graham Rahal understeered into the outside wall.<\/p>\n

Damage to his steering meant he couldn't control his car and parked it in the grass on the front straight.\ufeff<\/p>\n

Power and McLaughlin will have a shot at redemption on Monday when the second leg of the double-header gets underway at 4am, with coverage live, ad-free, and exclusively on Stan Sport.<\/p>\n

They'll start from first and second respectively while Newgarden will start from seventh.<\/p>\n
