A\ufeffustralian cricket<\/a> is in mourning after the death of former Test wicketkeeper Brian Taber.<\/p>\n

Taber, who represented Australia in 16 Tests between 1966 and 1970, passed away on Friday aged 83.\ufeff<\/p>\n

He is regarded as one of the finest keepers in Australian cricket history and took seven catches and a stumping on his Test debut against South Africa<\/a>\ufeff.<\/p>\n

Taber finished with 56 catches and four stumpings in the Test arena, and continued to be a mainstay in the New South Wales side, captaining the team while making 129 first-class appearances.<\/p>\n

\"Brian<\/p>\n

After his playing career wrapped up, Taber was known as a generous and widely popular contributor to Australian cricket filling many roles including as NSW coach and selector and manager of the Australian under-19 men's team.<\/p>\n

"He played 16 Tests as a wicketkeeper but had a profile so much higher than a man who'd done that," Aussie Test great Ian Healy told Nine.<\/p>\n

"(He played) 129 first-class games and was in the shadows of some great wicketkeepers, Barry Jarman, Rod Marsh, and he was a wonderful craftsman.<\/p>\n

"I think his greatest impact to cricket was his involvement in the under-19 tours all around the world and the development of young cricketers.\ufeff"<\/p>\n

One of the young cricketers Taber had a profound impact on was Callum Ferguson.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffHe was a fantastic person to have around your young, talented cricketers coming through the system," Ferguson told Nine.<\/p>\n

"He would've had a hand in the development of a lot of the Australian cricket teams of the last two decades, maybe further back, and we've seen the result of that.<\/p>\n

"He was just a wonderful man and a big loss for Australian cricket."<\/p>\n

The medal awarded to the player of the tournament at the national under-19 championship is named in his honour.<\/p>\n

"We are deeply saddened by Brian's passing and enormously grateful for his significant contribution to Australian cricket," Cricket Australia boss Nick Hockley said in a statement on Saturday.<\/p>\n

"Brian's vast popularity among former teammates, and all those fortunate enough to have known him, is just one indication of the impact he had on our game.<\/p>\n

"Brian had a passion for the development of young players, and it is fitting that the player of the tournament at the men's national under-19 championships will continue to receive the Brian Taber Medal.<\/p>\n

"Our deepest condolences to Brian's family, former teammates and his many friends at this sad time."<\/p>\n
