George Kambosos<\/a> says the boxing world is "forgetting" he has lost to just one man in his career as he takes his first step\ufeff back to the top of world boxing, starting this weekend in Oklahoma.<\/p>\n

The former lightweight world champion will take on England's Maxi Hughes on Sunday (AEST) in an IBF world-title eliminator.<\/p>\n

It's a massive opportunity for Kambosos, with the man who took his belts, American Devin Haney<\/a>, tipped to eventually move up in weight\ufeff, opening the door for more lucrative bouts for the Aussie – if he wins this fight.<\/p>\n

It's been a tough ride of late for the Greek-raised Sydney star, who took on the toughest bouts after shocking the world in late 2021.<\/p>\n

\"Kambosos<\/p>\n

Kambosos was on top of the world after defeating Teofimo Lopez<\/a>, in November 2021. Yet instead of taking the easy route, and setting up a more celebratory title defence for his first fight back in Australia since 2017, "Ferocious" took the biggest fight available and ended up losing his three belts to Haney in a one-sided stadium fight in Melbourne.<\/p>\n

The Sydneysider failed to regain his titles in the rematch in October but Kambosos believes he's coming back a better fighter.<\/p>\n

Speaking at the bout's official press conference this morning in the US, the former champ said his belief hasn't wavered.<\/p>\n

"We all know Devin is a class act," he said.<\/p>\n

"And styles make fights. So you learn from these fights and I've now seen it all. Championship, after championship after championship.<\/p>\n

"We can go from stadium fights to here in Oklahoma to Madison Square Garden taking all the belts \u2013 we've done it.<\/p>\n

"And you learn a lot about yourself, the kind of guys you're against, and you build from that.<\/p>\n

\"Kambosos<\/p>\n

"I've never been the guy who sits there and says 'oh, I had a loss, that's taken my confidence away'.<\/p>\n

"I came up against Devin Haney.<\/p>\n

"I lost to one guy and I think the boxing world is forgetting that.<\/p>\n

"I have to remind them again.<\/p>\n

"The biggest thing is \u2013 and excuse my French \u2013 I'm a greedy motherf—er now.<\/p>\n

"So every hole there is, I'm gunna take it".<\/p>\n

While Kambosos declared his confidence has not been shaken, he admitted having three back-to-back world title fights took its toll. Yet taking his fight camp to Las Vegas for the Hughes fight, has given him a new found burst.<\/p>\n

"If you look at the last year, three massive fights in 11 months," he added.<\/p>\n

"And big fights like that take a toll.<\/p>\n

"But I've been able to step back, refresh the body and I'm here now, feel fantastic.<\/p>\n

"Everyone knows the road that I took.<\/p>\n

"I was in the US for many years and everyone kind of heard 'who is this guy from Australia?'<\/p>\n

"Then I got my opportunity and made that statement.<\/p>\n

"As soon as I won the belts I went back home and, as much as I trained like an animal, there are distractions, I was trying to promote a stadium fight, it is what it is.<\/p>\n

"I had to come back to the US to feel what it's like here.<\/p>\n

"Reinvent, relight that fire even more.<\/p>\n

"I see this fight so clearly. There is not one bit of doubt in my mind that I will take this guy out."<\/p>\n

While most of the boxing world is tipping a Kambosos, Hughes said he won't take his first US headline fight for granted.<\/p>\n

"You start out, turn professional and watch all the big fights in America like 'I want a bit of that'," he said.<\/p>\n

"I've had me tough times in boxing, but I've shown a lot of mental strength and got through to this point.<\/p>\n

"I've earned my right to be on this stage as main event. I'm here on merit.<\/p>\n

"I've been here a week and a half.<\/p>\n

"We've been travelling around.<\/p>\n

"Training in Oklahoma City, getting to know some locals. And I'm enjoying every minute of the journey.<\/p>\n

"When all is said and done I'll be proud of every minute of my career and I'm happy to be main event on Top Rank."<\/p>\n
