Amarissa Kiara Toth went down to Kateryna Baindl 6-3, 6-1 in her round of 16 clash at the Hungarian Grand Prix, in her first match since her controversial victory over Zhang Shuai.<\/a><\/p>\n

But if Toth thought the furore around her actions in the prior round would die a quick a death in the aftermath, she was sorely mistaken.<\/p>\n

\ufeffAfter the tennis world expressed their contempt for the 20-year-old's behaviour<\/a>, with one WTA Tour peer describing it as "disgusting", Baindl used her post-match interview to praise Shuai, a respected veteran on the WTA Tour.<\/p>\n

"I just want to say I hope they can stay fair and that Shuai Zhang feels better and hopefully we'll see her back soon. She's an unbelievable player, very respectful, and a great person," Baindl said after the match.<\/p>\n

"There's a lot to learn from her."<\/p>\n

Shuai withdrew from the contest after it all got too much for the Chinese veteran following several controversial line calls and then Toth's unsportsmanlike behaviour, with the Hungarian playing up to a raucous home crowd by rubbing out a ball mark on the baseline.<\/p>\n

Toth was playing in her home country, in her first WTA event and the crowd began booing Shuai.<\/p>\n

After being handed the victory due to Shuai's teary retirement,\ufeff Toth celebrated her victory by raising her arms.<\/p>\n

After initially doubling down on her act with some extraordinary comments<\/a>, Toth eventually apologised to Shuai after her loss in the round of 16.<\/p>\n

"I did not think that my first ever WTA main draw success of my career would cause such a storm," Toth said in a statement uploaded to the tournament's Facebook page.<\/p>\n

"I am extremely sorry for what happened, I respect Zhang Shuai as a player and as a person. It was never my intention to disrespect, hurt or upset anybody, let alone Zhang Shuai.<\/p>\n

"I do realise I shouldn't have celebrated the way I celebrated after the match and I'm sorry for that. I was acting in the heat of the match and got caught up by my emotions and the moment. I focused on tennis, I didn't want to win like that."<\/p>\n
