Pat Cummins<\/a> is no stranger to criticism, but even his staunchest allies would struggle to pump his tyres after a horror day two at Old Trafford.<\/p>\n

The Australian skipper looked lost at times as the tourists were belted around the Manchester venue and England piled on 4-384<\/a> to take a commanding lead in the second Ashes<\/a> Test.<\/p>\n

Cummins had earlier been dismissed on the first ball of the day, spooning a James Anderson delivery to cover for an easy catch. Josh Hazlewood was dismissed soon after to end the Australian innings on a total of 317.<\/p>\n

In response, England opener Zak Crawley belted an incredible 189 to lift the hosts to the box seat. It seems rain will be Australia's best friend now as the tourists hope for a draw to take a 2-1 series lead in the final match.<\/p>\n

At one point during day two, former England wicketkeeper Mark Butcher noted Australia "look like a school team", and he was far from the only critic.<\/p>\n

England legend Nasser \ufeffHussain, who is a respected and measured analyst of the game, was confused as to who was actually captaining the Aussies.<\/p>\n

"Often when you look down on an Australian side historically, you know who the captain is, whether it be (Mark) Taylor, (Allan) Border, (Ricky) Ponting, (Steve) Waugh," he said in commentary.<\/p>\n

"You look down today and there have been a lot of cricketers waving their arms around trying to help their captain."<\/p>\n

Aside from his first-ball dismissal, Cummins grassed two catches and bowled four no-balls.<\/p>\n

But it was his decisions as skipper that were most concerning.<\/p>\n

\ufeffThe Australian field was changed mid-over constantly, only for England for blast through the gap where a fielder had just been. Cummins was also criticised for not bowling his all-rounders Mitchell Marsh and Cameron Green enough.<\/p>\n

"Cummins keeps changing his mind," former England bowler Alex Hartley said on BBC.<\/p>\n

"It's like his mind is cloudy, and he can't make the right decision."<\/p>\n

Cummins found an ally in his predecessor, Tim Paine.<\/p>\n

The former Test captain admitted Cummins had an off day at Manchester, but is backing him to bounce back on day three.<\/p>\n

"I will say before we get into it, it is so much easier to captain a side sitting on your lounge or sitting in a commentary box when you're absolutely under no pressure," Paine told SEN radio on Friday.<\/p>\n

"When the ball is flying around like Zak Crawley and the Poms had it flying around last night, it can go pear shaped and I think Pat would admit he didn't get everything right yesterday, but he's not going to.<\/p>\n

"He's never going to. No captain is ever going to.<\/p>\n

"All you can hope is he comes back tomorrow and they've had a good think about how they're going to slow the run rate down and build a bit of pressure and try and get some wickets that way.<\/p>\n

"It certainly wasn't his best day as captain. It wasn't his best day with the ball and it wasn't his best day with the field.<\/p>\n

"Pat Cummins' career would suggest he'll get it right tomorrow because he doesn't get it wrong often."<\/p>\n
