Ashes<\/a> antagonist Stuart Broad<\/a> believes Australia will be "worried" about the bold decision to not pick a frontline spinner in Manchester.<\/p>\n

And legendary Test captain Steve Waugh<\/a> agrees it was a "mistake" to exclude Todd Murphy from the line-up at Old Trafford.\ufeff<\/p>\n

The Aussies axed off-spinner Murphy for the fourth Test<\/a>, after he was called on to replace the injured Nathan Lyon at Headingley last week, where England won to make it a 2-1 ledger in favour of the tourists.<\/p>\n

Australia instead opted for a stacked batting line-up on Wednesday, playing all-rounders Mitch Marsh and Cameron Green in tandem, with part-time tweakers Travis Head, Steve Smith, and Marnus Labuschagne the only slow bowling options.<\/p>\n

England took 8-299 on day one under sunny skies<\/a>, although spinner Moeen Ali only contributed one of those wickets.<\/p>\n

Broad, though, says Ali's dismissal of Labuschagne proves the pitch is spin-friendly.<\/p>\n

"Old Trafford historically is a place you'd want a spinner," Broad said after play.<\/p>\n

"Moeen bowled great today and bowled some wicket-taking deliveries, and we saw a couple spin to the left (handers) as well.<\/p>\n

"That's something that I'm sure worried (Australia) a little bit when they saw.<\/p>\n

"Ultimately it looks a very dangerous team, they've got 300 runs on the board with their batting group and we've still got 12 wickets to get (to have a chance to win) the Test.<\/p>\n

"We can judge that selection once two innings are gone."<\/p>\n

It is the first time since 2012 that Australia has run with an XI missing a frontline spinner \ufeffin a Test match.<\/p>\n

Waugh admits he was surprised.<\/p>\n

\ufeff"I tend to disagree with it," Waugh told SEN radio on Thursday.<\/p>\n

"I think it's a mistake, particularly in Manchester where the ball does turn.<\/p>\n

"I know they're probably looking at the forecast and saying there's a bit of rain around, but you do need variation in the attack.<\/p>\n

"Particularly with the way England plays. They go at the bowlers really hard and we've got four right-arm quick bowlers so there's a bit of sameness about our attack."<\/p>\n

The Manchester match is certain to be impacted by wet weather, with rain forecast for days three and four, mostly.<\/p>\n

\"Day<\/p>\n

Labuschagne – the only Australian player to fall to spin bowling on day one – disagrees the pitch is conducive to slow bowling.<\/p>\n

"I think it's one of those wickets where I think because the wicket's been under cover for a few days, it didn't have that really rock hardness and the thatchiness of the grass (helped) spinning," Labuschagne said.<\/p>\n

"So I think once that wears off, I think the middle of the wicket is going to actually not spin so much.<\/p>\n

"The ends will rough up I think eventually if the weather stays good, but I think it's actually going to spin less as the game goes on from the good part of the wicket. That's in my opinion."<\/p>\n

Australia resumes its innings on Thursday night.\ufeff<\/p>\n
