Former England captain Nasser Hussain believes the hosts are "just edging"\ufeff the fourth Ashes Test<\/a> at stumps on day one \u2014 a day highlighted by an incredible Stuart Broad<\/a> achievement in Manchester.<\/p>\n

The English had a profitable day with the ball after Ben Stokes sent the Australians in to bat for the third Test in succession, leaving the visitors 8-299 at the close of play.<\/p>\n

While Chris Woakes led the charge on his way to taking 4-\ufeff52, the headline act of the day belonged to Broad, who became just the fifth man in history to take 600 Test wickets.<\/p>\n

Broad joined the revered club when he banged the ball in short, lulled Travis Head into hooking and watched as Joe Root gobbled up the ball at fine leg.<\/p>\n

The 37-year-old joined\ufeff fellow pace ace and long-time teammate James Anderson in the 600-wicket club, as well as legendary spinners Muttiah Muralidaran, Shane Warne and Anil Kumble.<\/p>\n

Muralidaran has 800 Test wickets beside his name, Warne\ufeff 708, Anderson 688, Kumble 619 and Broad 600.<\/p>\n

The only other men who've reached the 500-wicket mark are Glenn McGrath (563) and Courtney Walsh (519).<\/p>\n

"Absolutely fantastic achievement," Michael Atherton said in commentary when Broad moved to 600 Test wickets.<\/p>\n

"No matter what kind of a bowler you are, to get that number of wickets is amazing, but to do it as a fast bowler, with all the stresses and strains on your body, is quite incredible.<\/p>\n

"In the context of this game and this day, that is a big wicket of Travis Head.<\/p>\n

"But it is a very special wicket that Stuart Broad \ufeffwill remember for a long, long time.<\/p>\n

"It is such a staggering achievement."\ufeff<\/p>\n

Mitchell Starc (23) and Pat Cummins (one) were in the middle when day one drew to its close.\ufeff<\/p>\n

\ufeff"England have been excellent all day," Hussain said in commentary.<\/p>\n

"Another really good Test match day.<\/p>\n

"And England just edging it. Having won another toss, they've bowled beautifully, they've caught well.<\/p>\n

David Warner\ufeff looked promising early in the day, and peeled off three fours, but the veteran departed for 32 when Woakes caught his outside edge.<\/p>\n

\ufeffNeither Australian opener troubled the English with Usman Khawaja mustering just three runs before being trapped lbw by Broad.<\/p>\n

What followed was \ufeffa string of starts but nothing more \u2014 Steve Smith falling for 41, Marnus Labuschagne 51, Head 48 and Mitchell Marsh 51.<\/p>\n

When Marsh was on 35, Cameron Green prodded the ball to cover and called his batting partner through for a single, only to turn him back a second or two later. Stokes\ufeff was intent on swooping on the ball and catching Marsh out of his crease at the bowler's end, but the England skipper fumbled.<\/p>\n

Jonny Bairstow has had an awful series behind the stumps, but the England wicketkeeper pulled off a magnificent catch to send Marsh on his way<\/a>, diving low and at full stretch to his right to pluck a one-handed catch.<\/p>\n

Alex Carey was rocked by the extreme pace of Wood when his right elbow copped a viscous delivery. Shortly after, Woakes scalped Carey when the Australian gloveman opted to leave but chopped on, just as he'd done in the third innings of the Headingley Test<\/a>.<\/p>\n
