Ange Postecoglou<\/a> warns there is no guarantee World Cup success and excitement surrounding Australian football will have a lasting legacy on the nation.<\/p>\n

Postecoglou – recently announced as the new Tottenham<\/a> manager – led the Socceroos<\/a> to victory in the 2015 Asian Cup, defeating South Korea in extra time 2-1.<\/p>\n

However, the former Australian men's coach noted his achievements with the side failed to have a long-term impact on the country, warning he doesn't want to see the FIFA Women's World Cup<\/a> follow the same route.<\/p>\n

The 57-year-old is hopeful the excitement generated by the home Women's World Cup and the dream run to the round of 16 by the Socceroos in the 2022 Qatar World Cup will help lift interest in the game across Australia.<\/p>\n

"Where it is now is where it's been many times," Postecoglou told media in Perth.<\/p>\n

"It's what happens from now on. Australian football has always been pretty good at making a mark. Sonny (Spurs player Son Heung-min) mentioned 2015 and the Asian Cup (hosted by Australia) and barely a ripple.<\/p>\n

"Hopefully what it means now is, particularly with the girls, it's getting great exposure all over the world. In the UK there's great exposure there and there's a great chance to make an impact.<\/p>\n

"The Socceroos were brilliant at the World Cup. The A-League is producing good young players\u2026 It's about the game taking advantage of that and making an indelible footprint in the sporting landscape here, which we know is always challenging.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"Hopefully this time it takes advantage of it."<\/p>\n

Following Postecoglou's success at the helm of Scottish club Celtic, winning five titles throughout his two seasons, the former Socceroos coach caught the eye of struggling Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur – who finished eighth last season.<\/p>\n

Signing a four-year deal with Tottenham, Postecoglou's appointment marked a significant moment on both a personal and national level, becoming the first Australian in history to manage an English Premier League team.<\/p>\n

Speaking ahead of the Spurs' friendly against West Ham in Perth, Postecoglou admitted it's "pretty bizarre" his first game at the helm brought him back home Down Under.<\/p>\n

"We could've gone anywhere in the world and we ended up back in Australia which is great," Postecoglou said.<\/p>\n

"It is fair to say that since [my] appointment there has been a fair bit of attention, which is great – not so much for me personally, but for the game here in Australia, absolutely.<\/p>\n

"If I can add to that a little bit, that's great. I take great pride in that.<\/p>\n

"It is an important tour for us because we get to spend some time together as a group and get to know each other.\u00a0So far it's been positive."<\/p>\n

Postecoglou insisted his success as head coach of the Spurs will be determined by the response from the club's fans, stating: "My major barometer will be our fans. If our fans are happy at the end of the year, then we've done a good job".<\/p>\n

The former Socceroos coach revealed he will also be implementing a new style of play at Spurs – suspected to be similar to his 4-3-3 attacking formation used at Celtic, insisting he believes the style will be beneficial to the team.<\/p>\n

"Nothing has really changed in the way I do things. What I do try and envisage is the team playing a certain way. That's what drives me," he said.<\/p>\n

"I want the team to play football that is exciting for the fans and ultimately brings success. But all these kinds of things, they are all step-by-step processes for me. I am fairly narrow-minded just focusing on the present and making sure we are doing the best we can.<\/p>\n

"I keep saying to the players: Every day is an opportunity for us to improve, myself included. Every training session is an opportunity for us to get a little bit better, with the final goal in mind to produce a team that hopefully plays the football that I bring."<\/p>\n

The Spurs take on West Ham in Perth on Tuesday night.<\/p>\n
