The Wallabies are being burned by new "high risk" defensive \ufefftactics and are in a race against time to get it right before the Rugby World Cup<\/a> kicks off in September.<\/p>\n

Defence coach \ufeffBrett Hodgson, the former NRL star<\/a>, is trying to implement more line speed in defence but the results have been poor in the first two games of 2023.<\/p>\n

The Wallabies have shipped 77 points in two Rugby Championship losses against South Africa and Argentina and a revitalised New Zealand now looms ominously at the MCG.\ufeff<\/a><\/p>\n

Coach Eddie Jones has told the All Blacks to "look out" but behind that bluster he will be working overtime with Hodgson and the team on their tweaked defensive systems.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"The line speed puts so much pressure on," Morgan Turinui said on Stan Sport's Between Two Posts<\/em> in the wake of the 34-31 heartbreak against Argentina in Sydney.<\/a><\/p>\n

"Eddie's talking about a pressure game. But the line speed at the moment is putting almost more pressure on the Wallabies themselves than the opposition.<\/p>\n

"I can see the body language of some players thinking 'I've got to go for a low percentage play here because I'm stressed that we're not going to hold on'."<\/p>\n

Fellow analyst Stephen Hoiles said it would hopefully prove a case of short-term pain for long-term gain for the Wallabies.<\/p>\n

The problem is there are only three more Tests before the World Cup kicks off and they are against two of the tournament favourites in New Zealand (twice) and France.<\/p>\n

"This is the risk you take with a new setup and a new \ufeffstyle of footy, that guys are still trying to familiarise themselves with it," Randwick coach Hoiles said.<\/p>\n

"These guys aren't in the clearest of combinations with each other. They're probably trying to solve too much on their own… you're just not that comfortable with your environment. So you're panicking a little bit and that's the big one.<\/p>\n

"The best sides don't do that. They can defend for 15 phases and they can be going backwards and still be comfortable with their defensive line.<\/p>\n

\"'No<\/p>\n

"The Wallabies aren't in that place yet. Defensively, they've got a long way to go."<\/p>\n

The positives are that Australia do look potent with ball in hand despite ceding the majority of territory and possession to their opponents so far.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"I think they turned a corner on their attack. But their defence, they want a little bit more line speed I'm hearing and that comes with risk as well," Hoiles said.<\/p>\n

"That takes time and we don't have much of it. That's the big concern for us.<\/p>\n

"I'm comfortable and confident that the people in charge know what needs to turn around. That's the beauty of having an experienced head coach and it's not doom and gloom for me.<\/p>\n

"But they can't go down to Melbourne and have that type of performance."<\/p>\n
