On the eighth anniversary of Formula 1<\/a> driver Jule Bianchi's death, the life-saving development that came in the wake of his demise has been hailed once again.<\/p>\n

The Frenchman suffered critical head injuries after he crashed during the 2014 Japanese Grand Prix when his car slid off the road and went under a tractor recovering another car.<\/p>\n

Bianchi succumbed to his injuries nine months after the crash, marking the first time since 1994 that an F1 driver had died as a result of a crash in a grand prix.<\/p>\n

After his death, F1 and motorsport's governing body, the FIA, began developing cockpit protection systems which eventually led to the implementation of the "halo" in 2018.<\/p>\n

The halo is a piece of titanium that essentially creates a cage around the cockpit to prevent large objects from striking a driver's head.<\/p>\n

Most high-level open-wheel categories including F1, F2, and F3 have adopted the system or similar designs.\u00a0<\/p>\n

IndyCar<\/a> has created its own "aeroscreen", which combines a halo-style titanium frame and a laminated polycarbonate screen.<\/p>\n

Since then, there have been several large crashes in which the halo has been praised for saving drivers.\u00a0<\/p>\n

At the most recent round of the FIA Formula E World Championship, a wheel got dangerously close to Antonio Felix Da Costa's head but was stopped by the halo.<\/p>\n

Da Costa was among those to crash in the massive pile-up at the Rome E-Prix, triggered by Sam Bird spinning his Jaguar.<\/p>\n

Envision driver Sebastien Buemi slammed into the stationary car before Da Costa went into Buemi.<\/p>\n

He wrote on Twitter, "Thank you halo! Thank you FIA! Happy that I get to go back home today to the family.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"Passion for racing remains the same! Full gas in London for the final round in two weeks!"<\/p>\n
