The Matildas<\/a> have released a nearly three-minute collective statement calling out FIFA<\/a>'s enormous gender prize money gap on the eve of their home World Cup<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The video was put together by the Professional Footballers Australia \u2013 the players union that represents both the Matildas and Socceroos \u2013 who made a similarly put-together statement addressing human rights issues ahead of the Qatar World Cup last year.<\/p>\n

Rotating through players with each line of the statement, the video highlighted how far women's football had come, but also demonstrated it still had a long way to go.<\/p>\n

The PFA is currently in negotiations with Football Australia on a new CBA. The current deal expires at the end of the World Cup.<\/p>\n

"As Matildas, we are part of a special group of players (and) we stand on the shoulders of giants who have paved the way to afford the opportunities we have now," the players said.<\/p>\n

Sam Kerr read the line: "Those that came before us showed that being a Matilda means something. They showed us how to fight for recognition, validation, and respect.<\/p>\n

"They showed us how to leave the shirt in a better place for those yet to come.<\/p>\n

"Seven hundred and thirty-six footballers have the honour of representing their country on the world's biggest stage this tournament, yet many are still denied the basic right to organise and collectively bargain.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"Collective bargaining has allowed us to ensure we now get the same conditions as the Socceroos, with one exception: FIFA will still only offer women a quarter as much prize money as men for the same achievement."<\/p>\n

FIFA announced the 2023 Women's World Cup prize pool would be increased to $161 million, up from just $44 million at the 2019 World Cup in France. Each player will also be paid $44,000 from the governing body for group stage participation.<\/p>\n

Football Australia has committed to paying the Matildas stars the same percentage of prize money as the men.<\/p>\n

The men's World Cup last year had a prize pool of nearly $644 million. FIFA has stated it intends to reach parity at the 2027 Women's World Cup, but the PFA claims they have no formal policy or commitment to achieve it.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The 2007 Women's World Cup in China was the first to offer prize money at all. FIFA began awarding prize money for the men at the 1982 World Cup in Spain.<\/p>\n

The Matildas are one of only a handful of participating nations whose players are covered by a CBA. Others include Denmark, Sweden and the US.<\/p>\n

Players from England, Canada and Nigeria are in active disputes with their federations that could disrupt their campaigns. Both Canada and Nigeria are in Group B with Australia.\u00a0<\/p>\n

After winning the 2010 Asian Cup, the then-Matildas players were forced to return to part-time jobs. Their first CBA came two years later in 2012 for basic pay.<\/p>\n

The next CBA in 2013 meant the Matildas no longer had to wash their own jerseys.<\/p>\n

Players \u2013 including some still in the current squad \u2013 went on strike in 2015 amid negotiations for their next CBA, and eventually were successful.<\/p>\n

"Just like we do on the pitch, we stuck together, refused to back down and got the result. Now we're treated as serious professionals with fairness and respect that women deserve," the players said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"Our sisters in the A-League women's are still pushing for football to be a full-time career so they don't have to work part-time jobs like we had to.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"So we call on our fans to go all in at the tournament and continue that support by getting out to an A-League women's game to lift up the next generation of Matildas.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"We call on those who run the game to work, to provide opportunities for girls and women in football, whether that be players, coaches, administrators or officials.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"And we call on all those in positions of power across football, business and politics to come on this journey with us to make women's football as big as it can be here and around the world.<\/p>\n

"We know that with the privilege of being a Matilda comes enormous responsibility, we'll do everything we can to make the country proud when we take the field, and also to leave the shirt in a better place for those who follow in our footsteps.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"This is our legacy."<\/p>\n

PFA co-chief executive Kate Gill, \ufeffwho herself earned 86 Matildas caps, said she hoped Football Australia would treat the tournament as the start of further progress.<\/p>\n

"The tap can't just turn off post the women's World Cup," Gill said. "I think that's the biggest missing piece from the legacy document \u2013 or the legacy conversation \u2013 that Football Australia are having," she told the Sydney Morning Herald.<\/a><\/p>\n

"Where's the responsibility for them to make sure the elite women's competition can stand on its own two feet and that it offers full-time employment and a fair and consummate wage for what they're doing, because that's your next generation of Matildas.<\/p>\n

"That needs to be the call-out, and that's where the Australian Professional Leagues has a responsibility in that as well, and the clubs."<\/p>\n

The Matildas' World Cup campaign begins on Thursday night against the Republic of Ireland.<\/p>\n
