I think we did it by 10 seconds.\u00a0<\/p>\n "This team, they do deserve this because if we look at where we were earlier this season and even last year at this point, we were nowhere near this.<\/p>\n "I'm just extremely happy for everybody right now."<\/p>\n Although the record book will state he started on pole and won the race, it was far from a straightforward win for the Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing driver.<\/p>\n Lundgaard dominated the opening stint and established a handy four-second lead on the softer compound tyre before he pitted from the lead.<\/p>\n That buried him in the field while those on the alternate strategy ran longer on the hard compound tyre.<\/p>\n With Lundgaard in the pits and dropping to 12th, Team Penske's Scott McLaughlin inherited the lead.<\/p>\n While Lundgaard fought his way through the field back into the top 10, McLaughlin eventually pitted on lap 35 with a 6.4-second lead over Chip Ganassi Racing's Marcus Ericsson.<\/p>\n https:\/\/twitter.com\/hondaindy\/status\/1680676009656369153<\/a><\/p>\n Lundgaard was baulked by Ed Carpenter Racing's Rinus VeeKay but eventually netted the lead again on lap 38 once the hard tyre runners pitted.<\/p>\n With the race nearly half distance, Lundgaard led McLaughlin to the tune of six and a half seconds while Pato O'Ward held down third for McLarenn.<\/p>\n That lead vanished when drama struck on lap 41 as Romain Grosjean lost control of his car and crashed, bringing out the safety car.<\/p>\n Coming over a bump at turn 10, the wheel was yanked from his hands and he ploughed into the outside concrete wall.\u00a0<\/p>\n Lundgaard led the field to green on lap 46, but it was only briefly as Helio Castroneves spun on the restart.<\/p>\n That changed the complexion of the race completely as Lundgaard and several more opted to take the pain under yellow and pit.<\/p>\n Almost everyone inside the top 10 pitted, excluding McLaughlin, Scott Dixon, and VeeKay.<\/p>\n That dropped Lundgaard to seventh with 35 laps remaining.<\/p>\n What followed was an extraordinary close to the race. Chip Ganassi Racing's Alex Palou continued his charge forward into the top five with Lundgaard in tow.<\/p>\n McLaughlin pitted from the lead on lap 61 for his final stop and Dixon came in shortly thereafter.<\/p>\n The decisive move came on lap 62 when Lungaard went around the outside of Palou at turn three to take the lead.<\/p>\n Ultimately, that was the way it stayed as Lundgaard stretched his legs to clear out to an 11.7-second win.<\/p>\n Remarkably, from 15th on the grid, Palou finished second while Colton Herta was the quiet achiever in third from 14th on the grid.<\/p>\n The decision to pit late eventually paid dividends for Dixon, who fought through to fourth while this year's Indianapolis 500 winner Josef Newgarden wound up fifth.<\/p>\n McLaughlin recovered to sixth having started second while his countryman Marcus Armstrong ended up seventh for Chip Ganassi Racing.<\/p>\n Pato O'Ward, Graham Rahal, and Felix Rosenqvist completed the top 10.<\/p>\n https:\/\/twitter.com\/IndyCar\/status\/1680681587871039488<\/a><\/p>\n With the win, Lungdaard climbed three places to seventh in the standings while Palou extended his points lead over Dixon to 117.<\/p>\n The IndyCar Series continues on \ufeffJuly 23-24 with a double-header at Iowa Speedway.<\/p>\n For a daily dose of the best of the breaking news and exclusive content from Wide World of Sports, subscribe to our newsletter by<\/strong><\/em> clicking here<\/strong><\/em><\/a>!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<\/p>\n
