A\ufeffustralian teen sensation Cameron Myers<\/a> made the most significant breakthrough of his career on Sunday night (AEST), shattering a host of records and chalking up world championship and Olympic qualifiers.<\/p>\n

The running prodigy\ufeff from Canberra, who only turned 17 last month, produced an exceptional result in the men's 1500 metres at the Silesia Diamond League.<\/p>\n

Taking on a sizzling field in Poland headlined by reigning 1500-metre Olympic gold medallist Jakob Ingebrigsten, Myers stopped the clock at 3:33.26 on his Diamond League debut, finishing 11th.<\/p>\n

Ingebrigsten of Norway stopped the clock at 3:27.14 as he stormed to a European record, beating second place by 1.97 seconds as a long trail of runners, including Myers, notched brilliant times of their own.<\/p>\n

Myers ran the fastest 1500-metre time by an under-18 athlete in history, eclipsing the 3:33.72 posted by Kenya's Nicholas Kemboi in 2006.<\/p>\n

He also lowered the under-18 and under\ufeff-20 Australian records that already belonged to him.<\/p>\n

He satisfied the entry standard for next month's world championships, to be held in Budapest, Hungary, as well as the entry standard for the 2024 Paris Olympics<\/a>.<\/p>\n

If selected for Paris 2024, he will make his Olympic debut a month after turning 18.<\/p>\n

A maximum of three Australians will be selected for the men's 1500 metres at the Paris Olympics.<\/p>\n

Oliver Hoare, Stewart McSweyn, Matthew Ramsden and training buddy Jye Edwards are among the star runners Myers is up against as he pushes for Paris 2024 selection.\ufeff<\/p>\n

At the Silesia Diamond League on Sunday night, Myers smashed his previous personal best of 3:35.01, set in Lyon, France just over a week ago.<\/p>\n

"I'm just so happy, beyond words really," said Myers, who in February ran the fastest-ever mile by a 16-year-old<\/a>.<\/p>\n

"I knew what a race and what an opportunity it would be. I just hoped to make the best of it, and the result, yes, I'm very happy about!<\/p>\n

"The first lap was strung out. I was right at the back, but I felt good on the second and third laps and moved up just a bit. The last lap is really tough always, but I finished OK."\ufeff<\/p>\n

He's delighted to have met the world championship and Olympic qualifying times.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"\ufeffIt was great to get qualifiers, in particular for Paris next year," said Myers, who's in year 11 at Canberra's Lake Ginninderra College.<\/p>\n

"That's really pleasing."<\/p>\n

Myers, who's coached by renowned Australian running coach Dick Telford, admitted to sparing little thought for the under-18 world best during the lead-up to the race.<\/p>\n

"That under-18 world best is kinda cool," he sai\ufeffd.<\/p>\n

"I wasn't thinking too much about that.<\/p>\n

"All I know is I've got to keep improving in the next years."\ufeff<\/p>\n

The Silesia Diamond League was also a success for Linden Hall, who broke the \ufeffAustralian women's 1500-metre record, and ran world championship and Olympic qualifiers.<\/p>\n

Charging home fifth, the 32-year-old from Melbourne clocked 3:57.27 to break the national record held by Jessica Hull, who'd punched out a 3:57.29 at the Florence Diamond League last month<\/a>.<\/p>\n

High jumper Nicola Olyslagers was another stand-out Australian at the Silesia Diamond League, registering 1.98 metres to share victory with two women from Ukraine, Iryna Herashchenko and Yuliya Levchenko.<\/p>\n

While Olyslagers didn't reach the height of her personal best, 2.02 metres, she now shares the Silesia Diamond League meet record with\ufeff the two Ukrainians, and achieved the Olympic entry standard. She's already earned selection for the world championships.<\/p>\n

In the same event, Australian Eleanor Patterson, who shares the national women's record with Olyslagers, pencilled in a jump of 1.89 metres\ufeff as she returned from a battle with a fractured foot.<\/p>\n

Australia's Mackenzie Little clinched silver in the women's javelin with a throw of 64.50 metres, which met the world championship and Olympic qualifying times.\ufeff<\/p>\n

And Australian Abbey Caldwell also produced a terrific result, running an 800-metre personal best of 1:58.48 for fifth place while nailing the world championship and Olympic entry standards.<\/p>\n
