A\ufeff Sydney-based NRL<\/a> club has contacted police after one of its players was caught up in a blackmail attempt over a lewd image sent online.<\/p>\n

According to the Sydney Morning Herald<\/em><\/a>, the "representative star" contacted his club this week to alert them of the matter.<\/p>\n

\ufeffIt is believed the player sent a nude picture to an account on social media, before being asked to pay $5000 for the photo to not be sent to his friends and family by the person behind the account.<\/p>\n

After the player refused to pay up, the photo was then sent to his loved ones, resulting in a red-faced explanation.<\/p>\n

\ufeff"The matter has been reported to police and the relevant social media companies," a club spokesperson told the Sydney Morning Herald<\/em>.<\/p>\n

"It's important to note the player has been the victim here. It appears that this sort of incident is occurring on a regular basis to people across society."<\/p>\n

The incident comes just a week after the AFL confirmed an investigation into a collection of nude and graphic images of close to 50 past and present players that had been illegally shared.<\/p>\n

\ufeff"There appears to have been significant work involved in gathering the images and creating files for distribution," an AFL statement read, in part.<\/p>\n

"The AFL has no information regarding why the personal images have been circulated illegally and without consent or what the motive is in doing so."<\/p>\n
