F\ufefformer Australian captain Mark Taylor<\/a> has questioned Pat Cummins<\/a>' use of Todd Murphy<\/a>, saying the young off-spinner needs to be given more opportunities.<\/p>\n

Murphy was brought into the team for the third Test as a direct replacement for the injured Nathan Lyon, but \ufeffbowled just 9.3 overs for the entire match, picking up one wicket.<\/p>\n

The \ufeff22-year-old was not brought into the attack until the back end of both innings, bowling just two overs in England's run chase on day four.<\/p>\n

Taylor's message to Cummins and Australia's brains trust is simple: either use Murphy, or leave him out of the XI for Old Trafford.<\/p>\n

"If we get something similar (to Headingley) and Australia aren't going to use him … Australia can think about playing two all-rounders," he told the Sydney Morning Herald<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

"I would've liked to see him bowl before lunch, and I don't mean one over before lunch, I thought three or four before lunch when we got those couple of wickets and Ben Stokes came straight to the crease.<\/p>\n

"I think you've got to bring your spinner in early to give them some belief that they're in this, they're part of the way we're going to win the Test match. You saw what Pat did in the first innings by bowling him at the end, to Ben Stokes.<\/p>\n

"He (Murphy) got him out eventually. Yes, he hit him for a couple of sixes, but he nearly had him caught at long off when he was less than 50. So I think you've got to bring your slow bowler in to try to create opportunities."\ufeff<\/p>\n

Murphy's workload at Headingley paled in comparison to that of Lyon in the first Test, with the veteran spinner sending down a total of 53 overs in Australia's two-wicket win.<\/p>\n

Lyon bowled 13 more overs in England's first innings in the second Test before hobbling off the field with a calf injury.<\/p>\n

While Cummins opted for a pace-heavy attack at Headingley, Australian coach Andrew McDonald indicated that Murphy was likely to retain his spot in the side.<\/p>\n

\ufeff"We like a spinner," McDonald said earlier this week.<\/p>\n

"We like to have a balanced attack, and it gives you options, you can take pace out of the game, and you become one dimensional \u2013 whether it be with the right-arm bowlers or just pace bowlers in general \u2013 without the ability to turn to a spinner.<\/p>\n

"I think that leaves you a bit short at times, and England played a very aggressive side here (at Headingley) with Moeen (Ali) at seven and four quicks, but they value the spinner as well just to change the pace of the game."<\/p>\n

The fourth Ashes Test will get underway at Old Trafford from July 19 at 8pm AEST.<\/p>\n
