Geelong<\/a> champion Jimmy Bartel<\/a> has warned the Gold Coast Suns<\/a> they could be wasting their time if they hire ex Richmond 'super coach' Damien Hardwick<\/a> before conducting a much-needed holistic club review.<\/p>\n

It comes after the Suns sacked coach Stuart Dew on Tuesday<\/a> after AFL journalist Caroline Wilson reported relationships from within the club had further "soured"<\/a> and would lead to his imminent dismissal.<\/p>\n

"Go and review everything, your list management, your development, your player welfare," Bartel said on Nine's Eddie and Jimmy podcast<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

"There's no sense sending in Damien Hardwick where he's set up to fail.<\/p>\n

"If you're going to spend all this money on the 'super coach', you might as well have it best placed."<\/p>\n

But the pair agreed \ufeffthat the Suns need to eventually go all in on hiring three-time premiership coach Hardwick, even if the club isn't at his standard.<\/p>\n

"They need somebody to believe in," Bartel said.<\/p>\n

"If they go and get Hardwick, they start to look like a fairdinkum side," McGuire agreed.<\/p>\n

"They go and get a serious coach, it does set the tone for what they want to do."<\/p>\n

The Suns, who have failed to ever make the finals\ufeff in their 12 year history, sit in 13th on the AFL ladder with seven wins in 2023.<\/p>\n

Bartel and McGuire pinpointed where they believe Dew went wrong.<\/p>\n

"It all comes down to one horrendous quarter," Bartel said.<\/p>\n

Maguire took it a step further, suggesting that the axed coach never had a game plan that stood up to the rest of the league.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"You can lose every week in football, as long as you have a plan and go along with that plan," McGuire said.<\/p>\n

"The Gold Coast Suns plan has never got to the finals."<\/p>\n

But there is still some hope in making the eight this year for the Suns, which Bartel believes could happen if the right plan is put in motion.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"They've actually got some blokes who can play. They've got to toughen up a little bit," Bartel said.<\/p>\n

"You don't want to lose another football generation."<\/p>\n

Gold Coast assistant coach Stephen King will take the reins for the Suns in the interim\ufeff, as they host St Kilda on Saturday.<\/p>\n
