Football<\/a> Australia CEO James Johnson has \ufefflauded the commitment of the Matildas<\/a> ahead of the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup<\/a>, labelling them "legendary" even before they take to the pitch.<\/p>\n

Johnson addressed excited fans at Melbourne's Federation Square on Tuesday, as the Australians prepare for their warm-up match against France at Marvel Stadium on Friday.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"This is a golden period for Australian football," he declared.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffI want to acknowledge the commitment this team has made. Most of the players … have left their homes over the past three years. They're living and playing in countries like England, France, Sweden, Spain, the United States.<\/p>\n

"This has made the Matildas a stronger team\ufeff."<\/p>\n

Over one million tickets have been sold for the tournament, making it the biggest female sporting event in history.<\/p>\n

Johnson\ufeff said the growing interest in the tournament and the Matildas is no surprise, with the side facing off against the best in the world to lead them to this moment.<\/p>\n

"This team has been through the toughest schedule in the history of the Matildas program," Johnson said.<\/p>\n

"When they play France on Friday night, they will have played every\ufeff top team in the world in the past two and a half years."<\/p>\n

Johnson lauded the sacrifices across the board, praising the squad for "shaping" football for the next generation.<\/p>\n
