Phil Waugh will face all sorts of curve balls and challenging situations during his term as Rugby Australia's chief executive.<\/a><\/p>\n

And as he sat down for his first broadcast interview with Nine's Karl Stefanovic, he got a taste of things to come as the Today<\/em> host fired off his opening question.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"Congratulations. Nice to see you. I've known you for a long time," Stefanovic began.<\/p>\n

"You're one of the toughest competitors ever. Also, you and I did a Sydney to Hobart in 2011. You came out in a pair of budgie smugglers and you just went 'let's go!' Is that the kind of thing you bring?"<\/p>\n

Waugh, the former Wallabies captain, cracked up in laughter at North Sydney Oval.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"That's what we're bringing, right? That real passion and drive and, I remember that. I actually got sunburnt going across the Derwent! You've got to make it real."<\/p>\n

\ufeffThe 43-year-old former flanker, who has replaced Andy Marinos, plans to bring the same competitive fire and tenacity that was a hallmark of his 79 Test career.<\/p>\n

"I've got a huge responsibility. It's a huge honour, but the reality is, it's like putting on a Wallaby jersey. Anyone could put it on, you've actually got to go out and perform and so it's huge amount of responsibility."<\/p>\n

Waugh's appointment also means a fascinating shift in dynamic between he and Wallabies coach Eddie Jones.\ufeff<\/p>\n

\"Eddie<\/p>\n

"I mean, I played under Eddie," Waugh said.<\/p>\n

"So the relationship's probably changed a little bit from 20 years ago when I was playing under him. But, yeah, I'm really excited to work with him…<\/p>\n

"He brings an intensity into a squad that's very different to other squads.<\/p>\n

"And so he'll get, he'll squeeze, every bit of performance out of our players."<\/p>\n

After an ugly loss to the Springboks in Pretoria<\/a>, the Wallabies will play their first home Test of the year on Saturday against the Pumas in Pretoria.\ufeff<\/p>\n
