Ex-international Drew Mitchell<\/a> has suggested Eddie Jones'<\/a> tit-for-tat exchange with a journalist might have only served as a distraction from a woeful reunion with the Wallabies<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Jones fired up in his first post-match press conference since taking over the Wallabies after they were walloped by the Springboks in Pretoria, going down 43-12<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Jones labelled the journalist a "smart arse"<\/a> after he asked whether it was "a bit of a relief now" to face a so-called B-team.<\/p>\n

After the press conference had finished, Jones continued to berate the journalist on his way out the door.<\/p>\n

\"Eddie<\/p>\n

"There could be a little bit of that, a bit of gamesmanship making sure we're talking about Eddie rather than the performance," said Mitchell on Nine's Sports Sunday<\/em>.<\/p>\n

"He's also staunch on respect. We saw that there. He kept going to him (the journalist) after the press conference was done \u2013 'just have some respect'.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"There was a little bit of cheekiness layered in that question from the journo and I like it, I like Eddie Jones going up and saying 'No mate, don't be a smart arse'."<\/p>\n

The impassioned response followed a one-sided match at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.<\/p>\n

Although the Wallabies opened the scoring courtesy of a blistering Marika Koroibete run, it was one-way traffic thereafter as the home side scored six tries.<\/p>\n

Carter Gordon scored a consolation try to ensure the Wallabies got out of single figures.<\/p>\n

For Mitchell, there was little to write home about.<\/p>\n

"Look, that was just a dominant performance from the Springboks," he said.<\/p>\n

"They just bashed our guys all over the park. They just dominated territory. We just weren't playing in the right areas of the field and then we were we just didn't fire a shot.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"I just think we went up there knowing it was altitude, knowing that they're a big team, and probably changed the way we wanted to play to try and suit the Springboks rather than finding our brand.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"Very rarely do you see a Wallabies team go up against an opposition and just not fire a shot, and that's probably the most disappointing thing for them."<\/p>\n

The Wallabies will face Argentina at Western Sydney Stadium on Saturday, July 15 for the second leg of the Rugby Championship.<\/p>\n

Mitchell said the loss to the Springboks won't be well received but have a chance at redemption when they come up against the Pumas.<\/p>\n

The Pumas were delivered a drubbing by the All Blacks in their first clash, the visitors winning 41-12.<\/p>\n

"They've lost a bit of momentum in terms of the game because people were hyped up for Eddie Jones' first game," said Mitchell.<\/p>\n

"We've probably missed out on a bit of an opportunity there. We get another go next week against Argentina. It's a long week but we get to have another crack."<\/p>\n
