Wallabies coach Eddie Jones took aim at a "smart arse" South African journalist after a deflating \ufeff43-12 Rugby Championship loss to a second string Springboks side.<\/a><\/p>\n

Before leaving for South Africa, Jones told reporters in Sydney<\/a> that he hoped the world champions would name a full strength team for his first Test since returning to Australia.<\/p>\n

But the Springboks instead sat a dozen top players<\/a> \ufeffto travel to New Zealand and prepare for the round two clash with the All Blacks in Auckland.<\/p>\n

"Eddie, you expressed your disappointment in the week that you weren't playing the first choice Springboks side. Is that a bit of relief now?" the reporter asked Jones in Pretoria.<\/p>\n

"South Africans are good at winning. You don't have to be a smart arse mate," Jones fired back at the Loftus Versfeld press conference.<\/p>\n

"We were well and truly beaten today by a Springboks side that old mate is calling the B team, right? I never knew there was a Springboks side that was called the B team."<\/p>\n

Jones then approached the journalist \ufeffafter the press conference to scold him further.<\/p>\n

"You should have more respect mate. I never said that mate," Jones said.<\/p>\n

"I said we always want to play the best. Show some respect."<\/p>\n

Australia scored the first and last tries at Loftus but conceded 43 points in between to underline the task Jones faces at the start of his second spell in charge of the Wallabies with a Rugby World Cup looming in September.<\/p>\n

Diminutive winger Kurt-Lee Arendse continued his free scoring start to international rugby with a hat trick in his eighth Test for the Boks.<\/p>\n

Leading 17-5 at halftime and getting into its stride, South Africa unleashed a ruthless performance in the second half, with Arendse completing his hat trick in the 50th minute and the Springboks adding two penalty tries \u2014 which both cost an Australia player a yellow card \u2014 and a final score by flanker Pieter-Steph du Toit.<\/p>\n

"We just got beaten to the punch everywhere," Jones told Stan Sport's Morgan Turinui before the press conference fireworks.<\/p>\n

"We got beaten in the set piece. We got beaten on the gain line, we got beaten in the air. And if you don't win any of those contests, you know it's going to be a long day in the office, which it was for us today."<\/p>\n

Australia has lost all eight of its Tests in Pretoria since the first in 1963.<\/p>\n

It was Jones' first Test in charge since being fired by England last year before replacing Dave Rennie with the Wallabies.<\/p>\n

"There wasn't too many positives today," Jones conceded.<\/p>\n

"Every time they got an opportunity, they converted it into points."<\/p>\n

But Jones maintained the Wallabies could bounce back immediately against Michael Cheika's Argentina in\ufeff Sydney on Saturday.<\/p>\n

"We've got to identify two or three areas and one's certainly the consistency of our set piece. Our scrum definitely needs a continual work on and then we've got to find ways to get over the gain line. So we fix those against Argentina and we'll be back in the money."<\/p>\n

Marika Koroibete flew down the left wing to put Australia into a surprise 5-0 lead in the eighth minute but the visitors were on the back foot for pretty much the entire game after that.<\/p>\n

Carter Gordon came off the bench for his Test debut and marked it with a breakaway consolation try in the last minute, set up by a pass from Koroibete.<\/p>\n

Between those moments, Australia's pack didn't have the impact Jones was hoping for in matching the Springboks, and recalled 35-year-old flyhalf Quade Cooper barely touched the ball in the first half and was given no chance to influence anything in the second.<\/p>\n

The big win was also a victory for South Africa's strength in depth ahead of its World Cup title defence.<\/p>\n

Nienaber believed many of his backup players were good enough to beat Australia and he was proved more than right.<\/p>\n

South Africa was uncharacteristically expansive in the first hour of play, and threw 170 passes overall to Australia's 101 in an attempt to find more in its arsenal than just set piece dominance and tactical kicking.<\/p>\n

But the Springboks pack did stamp home its dominance at the end, adding a fourth through a penalty try after Wallabies hooker Dave Porecki pulled a rolling maul down as it reached the tryline.<\/p>\n
