As Travis Head<\/a>'s teammates wilted, the middle-order dynamo thrived.<\/p>\n

The Australians' bid to build a match-winning lead grew shaky as wickets tumbled on day three of the third Ashes<\/a> Test.<\/p>\n

But Head withstood a menacing England pace attack and, when the hosts began eating into the tourists' tail, he went for the tonk.<\/p>\n

He resumed on 18 and carried on to make 77 as the Australians padded out their lead to 250.<\/p>\n

Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett then survived an unenviable five-over period, leaving England on 0-27 at the close of play.<\/p>\n

Crawley will resume on nine and Duckett 18 as the English eye 251 runs to win the Leeds Test and ensure their hopes of winning the Ashes series remain alive.<\/p>\n

"Well played Travis Head," said former England captain Nasser Hussain in commentary after the Australian was dismissed.<\/p>\n

When Pat Cummins was caught behind off the bowling of Wood, the English had four wickets for the day and the Australians had added just 54 runs.<\/p>\n

But Head transformed into one-day mode, even pumping Wood for two sixes in consecutive balls behind square on the leg side.<\/p>\n

\ufeffThe South Australian pummelled seven fours and three sixes in his knock of 77, before picking out Duckett in the deep.<\/p>\n
