Eddie Jones' return as Wallabies coach has ended in disaster as Australia was mauled 43-12 \ufeffby a second string Springboks side in Pretoria on Sunday (AEST).<\/a><\/p>\n

Wallabies winger Marika Koroibete and five-eighth Carter Gordon scored the first and last tries of the Rugby Championship opener but in between it was one way traffic.<\/p>\n

Pocket rocket winger Kurt\ufeff-Lee Arendse scored a hat trick for South Africa, who sent 13 top players in an advance party to New Zealand yet still had all the firepower.<\/p>\n

"T\ufeffhis has been a disaster for Eddie Jones and the Wallabies, in his first Test back in charge," Wallabies legend Tim Horan said on Stan Sport.<\/p>\n

"This has been a physical masterclass from the Springboks."<\/p>\n

Wallabies hooker Dave \ufeffPorecki and winger Suliasi Vunivalu were sinbinned as Australia's Loftus Versfeld record slipped to 0-8 while flanker Tom Hooper's Test debut ended early because of a shoulder injury.<\/p>\n

"It's a terrible start to Eddie's campaign in a World Cup season," former Wallabies loose forward Stephen Hoiles said on Stan Sport.<\/p>\n

"I think we had such high expectations. We know that it's a really challenging place to go and play a game of Test rugby against the reigning world champions. But I don't think any of us saw that coming and that's a really disappointing start to the campaign.<\/p>\n

"Some players got their opportunity to say why they should play in a World Cup and other players probably showed why they might not make the World Cup this year."<\/p>\n

Leading 17-5 at halftime, South Africa unleashed a ruthless performance in the second half, with Arendse completing his hat trick in the 50th minute and the Springboks adding two penalty tries and a final score by flanker Pieter-Steph du Toit.<\/p>\n

Koroibete flew down the left wing to put Australia into a surprise 5-0 lead in the eighth minute but the visitors were on the back foot for pretty much the entire game after that.<\/p>\n

Gordon came off the bench for his Test debut and marked it with a breakaway consolation try in the last minute, set up by a pass from Koroibete.<\/p>\n

The win was also a victory for South Africa's strength in depth ahead of its World Cup title defence.<\/p>\n

The Wallabies, meanwhile, must regroup for a clash with Argentina in Sydney on Saturday.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"There were some positives – Carter Gordon came on and did some good stuff. Timmy (Horan) just said he should start next week and those conversations will take place," Hoiles said.<\/p>\n

"The fans will be out there saying 'oh, here we go again, another season.' But this is one of the most challenging places to win a game of rugby.<\/p>\n

"It might look like it's all doom and gloom. But I see a couple of changes to some personnel and tactics and a shift in mindset and a different team you're playing against.<\/p>\n
