The\ufeff Adelaide Thunderbirds<\/a> have defeated the NSW Swifts<\/a> in extra time to claim the 2023 Super Netball league<\/a> championship.<\/p>\n

In their first national title triumph since 2013, England international Eleanor Cardwell slotted a super shot with seconds to spare to nudge the Thunderbirds to a 60-59 win at John Cain Arena.<\/p>\n

In a dramatic conclusion, the teams were unable to be separated at the end of full-time. Locked at 54-all, five thrilling minutes of extra time was played out with Adelaide emerging victorious.<\/p>\n

It was a stunning hit-out between the sides as the Thunderbirds went three-from-three against the Swifts having met in the final Super Netball round, the major semi final and finally the grand final.<\/p>\n

Cardwell was subsequently named player of the match after scoring 31 from 33 goals and five from six super shots in the goal attack bib.<\/p>\n

Despite trailing by \ufeffas many as nine goals during the match, the Swifts stole the lead with just seven minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.\ufeff<\/p>\n

But no winner could be crowned after 60 minutes as fellow English Rose Helen Housby levelled the scores.<\/p>\n

The Swifts mounted one last roll the dice with less than 10 seconds remaining but star goal keep Shamera Sterling proved the hero for the Thunderbirds taking a stunning intercept.<\/p>\n

In extra time, Swifts' goal defence Maddy Turner was penalised for a held ball in the circle, allowing Cardwell to gain her side a one-goal advantage with the centre pass to follow.<\/p>\n

However, with two minutes remaining, \ufeffCardwell was handed an offensive contact, gifting possession back to the Swifts to level through long-range specialist Sophie Fawns.<\/p>\n

In the dying moments, Sterling again flew through the air to pluck an intercept, sending the ball back down to Caldwell to score the winning super shot.<\/p>\n

A consolation \ufeffsuper shot to Housby rounded out the final but it was not enough to change the outcome.<\/p>\n
