Mitchell Marsh<\/a> was so destructive with the bat and effective with the ball as he returned to the Test scene that, in the eyes of Mark Taylor<\/a>, Cameron Green<\/a> no longer has a stranglehold on Australia's all-rounder position.<\/p>\n

After Marsh claimed a five-wicket haul in his last Test, against\ufeff England at The Oval in the 2019 Ashes, he admitted to feeling like "most of Australia hate me".<\/p>\n

But he's since carved out a couple of superb performances to win the hearts of Australians, lifting Australia to victory in the 2021 T20 World Cup with \ufeffan unbeaten knock of 77<\/a>, before blasting a century on the opening day of the third Ashes<\/a> Test.<\/p>\n

The Australians were in trouble at \ufeff4-85 when Marsh lumbered to the crease at Headingley, but what followed was a run-a-ball innings of 118 that set up the tourists for 263 all out.<\/p>\n

Unleashing a powerful array of drives, cuts, hooks and pulls, Marsh\ufeff pummelled 17 fours and four sixes in Leeds.<\/p>\n

The 31-year-old then \ufeffclaimed the wicket of England opener Zak Crawley as the hosts battled to stumps on day one at 3-68.<\/p>\n

Marsh was only selected for this Test because Green was ruled unavailable due to a minor hamstring strain.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"Mitch is only 31 so he's still got a few years left in him. I think because of the emergence of Cameron Green we've sort of forgotten a little bit about Mitch, but he might be one of those guys who matures a bit later in life as a cricketer," Taylor told Wide World of Sports.<\/p>\n

"He had to wait for nearly four years for this opportunity, but when he got the opportunity he grabbed it with both hands and that's all you can do.<\/p>\n

"All of a sudden he's now going to make it hard for the Australian selectors to leave him out if he keeps playing like that. So, it's amazing how this game can turn very, very quickly.<\/p>\n

"Full marks to him for hanging in there for as long as he has as a Test cricketer and not giving it up and taking the easy option, which would have been going and playing one-day cricket and T20 cricket. He's wanted to keep playing Test cricket and he's been rewarded.<\/p>\n

"After today I think we have a nice competition going on \u2014 two Western Australians.<\/p>\n

"There's no doubt that Cameron Green burst onto the scene, but he's only got the one Test hundred so far. Been very handy with the ball and brilliant in the gully, no doubt about that, so it's certainly no slight on Cameron Green and what he's done.<\/p>\n

\"Highlights:<\/p>\n

"But Mitchell Marsh, who's been tried a number of times, in and out of the side on numerous occasions in his career \u2014 he got another opportunity today and made a hundred. He also got a wicket late.<\/p>\n

"So all of a sudden the competition is back on for the all-rounder spot."<\/p>\n

Marsh struggled with the blade over the first 32 Tests of his career, mustering 1260 runs at 25.20.<\/p>\n

He\ufeff struck two centuries \u2014 knocks of 181 and 101 in the 2017-18 Ashes series in Australia \u2014 but made few other notable contributions with the bat.<\/p>\n

He also did little damage with the ball, capturing 42 wickets at 38.64.<\/p>\n

\ufeffGreen's place in the side has virtually been unquestioned since he made his debut at the age of 21, against India at Adelaide Oval.<\/p>\n

From 23 Tests he's compiled 1056 runs at 34.06, as well as 28 wickets at 36.32.<\/p>\n

He's proven incredibly safe in the gully and has taken a host of phenomenal catches just wide of the slips cordon.<\/p>\n

Marsh was given a life on 12 on day one of the Headingley Test, surviving when Joe Root grassed a catch at first slip off the bowling of Chris Woakes.<\/p>\n

But Taylor described his innings as "superb".<\/p>\n

"There's no doubt that's as good as I've seen him bat," Taylor said.<\/p>\n

"Maybe he just needed a bit of luck, and he got that today when he was on 12, but after that he hit the ball like no one else.<\/p>\n

"The ball moved around a little bit all day and it wasn't an easy day for batting, but in that middle session he made it look easy. Some of his striking was as good as we've seen."<\/p>\n

Featuring in his first match of the series, England speed demon Mark Wood stunned the Australians with a blistering four-over spell in the morning session.<\/p>\n

The right-armer regularly hit 150km\/h, peaked at 156km\/h and ripped through the defence of Usman Khawaja\ufeff, removing the Australian opener for 13.<\/p>\n

Overall, he took 5-\ufeff34 from 11.4 overs.<\/p>\n

Steve Smith lost his wicket for 22 in his 100th Test, edging a Stuart Broad delivery to Jonny Bairstow. The champion batter was astounded that the umpire gave him out, before an unsuccessful review sealed his fate.\ufeff<\/p>\n

When England resumes on 3-68 on day two,\ufeff Joe Root will continue on 19 and Bairstow one.<\/p>\n

Australia is leading the series 2-0 after triumphing at Edgbaston and Lord's.\ufeff<\/p>\n
