Jordan Thompson lost the match but won the respect of Novak Djokovic as the defending champion rolled into the third round of Wimbledon on Thursday (AEST).<\/a><\/p>\n

Australia's Thompson, ranked 70th in the world, had never met Djokovic in a competitive match before the centre court clash.<\/p>\n

But the 29-year-old \ufeffat least made Djokovic sweat for his 6-3, 7-6(4), 7-5 win.<\/p>\n

"It is a huge privilege at my age (36) and at this point of my career and to push it with the young guns," Djokovic said.<\/p>\n

"We have a very romantic and special relationship this court and I do. But I don't want to meet him (Thompson) this early in the tournament.<\/p>\n

"Congrats to him, he was a bit unlucky in the second set, he played a great match and deserves a big round of applause for sure."<\/p>\n

It\ufeff was Djokovic's 30th straight win at Wimbledon and he hasn't lost on his beloved centre court since 2013.<\/p>\n

"I only got broken twice but to be honest I didn't get a look in on his serve. I put in a good performance, but he was quite dominant," Thompson said.<\/p>\n

"I am not a serve-volleyer but I did that every first serve and more than half on my second serve."<\/p>\n

Three other Australian men's players \u2013 Alex de Minaur, Jason Kubler and Chris O'Connell \u2013 were leading their matches before bad light forced play to be suspended.<\/p>\n
