(Photo by Michael Steele\/Getty Images)\" data-width=\"1396\" data-height=\"785\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&quot;I was surprised when I was part of the break, and the bunch didn&#x27;t really react,&quot; Hindley said.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;We decided to start working in the group and just have fun. Initially my idea was to just get a buffer to the other general classification guys.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Hindley, who hails from Perth and rides for the Bora-Hansgrohe team, was part of a 36 man group that managed to escape from the pack early on.<\/p>\n<p>Following several moves from other contenders including Wout van Aert and Julian Alaphilippe, Hindley attacked 4km from the Marie-Blanque summit.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;On the Soudet I started thinking about a stage win, at the bottom of the climb I also saw my parents which was really special and emotional,&quot; Hindley said.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;When I attacked, everything went so fast, I knew I had a good chance, but I only started really believing on the home straight.&quot;<\/p>\n<p><img data-id=\"042733a9-4c4e-496e-8c28-b243ebbc0169\" src=\"https:\/\/sportinfo.pro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/042733a9-4c4e-496e-8c28-b243ebbc0169-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Jai Hindley of Australia and Team BORA-Hansgrohe celebrates at finish line as stage winner during the stage five of the 110th Tour de France 2023 a 162.7km stage from Pau to Laruns \/ #UCIWT \/ on July 05, 2023 in Laruns, France. (Photo by David Ramos\/Getty Images)\" data-width=\"4355\" data-height=\"2450\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After cresting first, Hindley went all in, averaging 55.8kph from the top of the mountain to the finish, with a maximum speed of 82.9kph in the downhill.<\/p>\n<p>Giulio Ciccone was second, 32 seconds off the pace, with Felix Gall completing the stage podium.<\/p>\n<p>Defending champion Jonas Vingegaard moved into second place in the general classification, 47 seconds behind Hindley.<\/p>\n<p>Vingegaard perfectly timed his attack after American teammate Sepp Kuss imposed a fast and exhausting tempo that took its toll on previous second-place sitter Tadej Pogacar, who found out after the finish that his girlfriend had crashed during the women&#x27;s Giro in Italy, and may have suffered a concussion.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;It&#x27;s a bit more of a sad news than losing 50 seconds to Jonas, or one minute,&quot; Pogacar said.<\/p>\n<p>Vingegaard stopped short of celebrating, perfectly aware that the Tour is a three week race of attrition full of twists and turns.<\/p>\n<p><img data-id=\"4e03350a-8202-4a9c-a5ea-72031601d52e\" src=\"https:\/\/sportinfo.pro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/4e03350a-8202-4a9c-a5ea-72031601d52e-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Jai Hindley of Australia and Team BORA-Hansgrohe competing through the fog during the stage five of the 110th Tour de France 2023 a 162.7km stage from Pau to Laruns \/ #UCIWT \/ on July 05, 2023 in Laruns, France. (Photo by Tim de Waele\/Getty Images)\" data-width=\"5568\" data-height=\"3132\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&quot;I know Tadej, he never gives up,&quot; Vingegaard said.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;It will be a fight all the way to Paris.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Vingegaard dethroned Pogacar last year and arrived in top form to defend his title. Poga\u010dar, who rides for UAE Team Emirates, was untouchable earlier this year but a crash two months ago that left him with a broken wrist requiring surgery has hampered his preparations for the Tour.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;The high mountains have spoken the truth,&quot; UAE team principal Mauro Gianetti said.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Vingegaard is at the top and Tadej has yet to reach his best.
