Scott McLaighlin<\/a> says he was starved of a chance to score another IndyCar<\/a> podium after some robust defence by a lapped car.<\/p>\n

The Team Penske pilot finished fifth at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course while AJ Foyt Racing's Benjamin Pedersen finished second-to-last, acting as a bit of a roadblock..<\/p>\n

McLaughlin spoke with Pedersen post-race, offering some choice words.<\/p>\n

"I just said he's not going to make any friends if he's going to hold people up," said McLaughlin.<\/p>\n

"He's not even in our race. I get that he's in a race of his own, but anyway, it is what it is.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\"Scott<\/p>\n

"Good Ranchers Chevy was really good. I'm really happy with it.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"We lost three or four seconds in that exchange because of the 55, but it is what it is.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"It's give or take in this series and if I'm a lap down and the 55 is behind me who knows what I'm going to do?"<\/p>\n

McLaughlin's top five finish puts him 148 points adrift of series leader Alex Palou, who dominated the day for his third consecutive race win and fourth triumph of the season.<\/p>\n

Despite the valley between McLaughlin and Palou in the points, the New Zealander was nonetheless upbeat about his form.<\/p>\n

"Fifth was our race today but I really think a podium was our potential and you can't be upset about that," said McLaughlin.<\/p>\n

"We've just got to keep rolling here. We've got great momentum. I'm really proud of everyone for the hard work. We're in a good spot now. I feel really good heading to Toronto."<\/p>\n

Palou cruised to victory, beating Chip Ganassi Racing teammate Scott Dixon in the 80-lapper.<\/p>\n

Second place vaulted the New Zealander up from fifth in the standings to second, 110 points in arrears of the lead.<\/p>\n

Australia's Will Power finished third, keeping his place in seventh overall.<\/p>\n

The fight for second is tight with ust 17 points splitting second through fifth.<\/p>\n

Palou finds himself in a similar situation as what Dixon was in 2020 when he won the first three races of that season and never ceded the series lead.<\/p>\n

He too got out to an enormous lead, but fell away at the tail of the year to set up a thrilling close to the championship \u2013 ultimately falling the way of Dixon for his sixth title.<\/p>\n

While Palou's dominant streak is a concern for those behind him, Dixon believes it's not insurmountable.<\/p>\n

"Anything is possible," said Dixon.<\/p>\n

"We've seen, you're never out of it until you're out of it. We'll keep trying as hard as possible.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"I know we've tied on a championship in '15 over (Juan Pablo) Montoya that we thought we were possibly out of it.<\/p>\n

"That's what's fun about the IndyCar Series and all the competition, but you've got to give them credit, they're doing a helluva job."<\/p>\n

The IndyCar Series continues on July 17 on the streets of Toronto.<\/p>\n
