IndyCar<\/a> champion Simon Pagenaud has walked away unharmed from a terrifying crash at Mid-Ohio when his car rolled seven times through a gravel trap before coming to rest on its side.<\/p>\n

Pagenaud told his Meyer Shank Racing team over the radio that his brakes had failed while travelling about 290 km\/h at the end of a straight.<\/p>\n

The car was launched through the gravel and into the air, barrel-rolling several times as pieces ripped away, before finally coming to a stop.<\/p>\n

He climbed out as the safety crew rushed to check on him, and the 2016 series champ sat on the gravel by the wreckage to collect himself.<\/p>\n

Pagenaud then got to his feet and stepped into the medical car for a trip to the track\u2019s care centre.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a hell of a ride, that\u2019s for sure,\u201d Pagenaud said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had something go wrong and I couldn\u2019t slow down. I tried to make the corner anyways.<\/p>\n

"I know that gravel is deadly. Michael Andretti has done it, so I guess I joined another legend, so that\u2019s cool.\u201d<\/p>\n

The wreck was reminiscent of Andretti\u2019s crash 25 years ago at Mid-Ohio, where he also rolled through a gravel trap.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was just trying to bail out,\u201d Pagenaud said. \u201cIt\u2019s downhill, which is nuts. The car took off, I hit the gravel and it just rolled. I\u2019m just glad I didn\u2019t go over the tyre wall. So glad that we have the aeroscreen \u2014 so thankful that the IndyCar has the aeroscreen.\u201d<\/p>\n

The screens are laminated polycarbonate and were implemented several years ago to protect drivers from debris. In this case, the screen not only protected Pagenaud from the gravel but kept his head from hitting the ground and tire barrier.<\/p>\n

IndyCar said Pagenaud was evaluated and released from the care center but, according to series protocol, he would not be cleared to return to the track.<\/p>\n

That meant Pagenaud would miss qualifying scheduled for later in the day, though he could clear another evaluation that would allow him to race.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m ready. I can get back in right now. It\u2019s not a problem,\u201d Pagenaud said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is a protocol to follow to keep the drivers safe. We will see what they say. But very unfortunate day for us. But I got some TV time, I guess.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pagenaud, whose future with Meyer Shank Racing is in question, has yet to finish in the top 10 through the first eight races this season.<\/p>\n

Pagenaud's best finish was 13th on the streets of Detroit, one week after the 2019 Indy 500 winner was involved in one of the late crashes that produced a series of red flags and controversial ending to the \u201cGreatest Spectacle in Racing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pagenaud completed only three laps in Saturday\u2019s practice, which was led by Aussie Will Power of Team Penske.<\/p>\n

Series leader Alex Palou, who has won three of the past four races, was second on the speed chart for Chip Ganassi Racing.<\/p>\n

Colton Herta was third in his Andretti Autosport car with Pato O'Ward \u2014 fastest in Friday's qualifying session \u2014 fourth for Arrow McLaren.<\/p>\n

Qualifying saw Herta take pole position ahead of Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing driver Graham Rahal.<\/p>\n

Scott McLaughlin will start eighth behind Team Penske stablemate Power. \ufeff<\/p>\n

There is rain in the forecast at Mid-Ohio, which could be to Pagenaud\u2019s advantage as the team tries to ready his backup car.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt the end of the day, if it\u2019s raining, I\u2019ll be all right,\u201d the 39-year-old Frenchman said, \u201cbecause the problem is, I\u2019ve lost so much track time now and it\u2019s so competitive. The track evolves so much that I\u2019ve lost a lot of ground, so it\u2019d be hard to be competitive in a dry situation. But if it is raining, my chances are good.\u201d<\/p>\n
